Student Health and Wellness works with a suite of healthcare professionals to make sure that students' healthcare needs are met. Students in Barrie are able to access health services at the Lakehead Orillia Wellness Centre (500 University Ave, Orillia). Where possible, services are also available virtually, or in-person at alternative locations.

Nurse Practitioner

Appointments with a Nurse Practitioner from the Huronia Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic are available at the Lakehead Wellness Centre (500 University Ave, Orillia) or the Huronia Nurse Practitioner-led Clinic (3331 Line 4 North, Oro-Medonte). Depending on the health concern, virtual appointments are also available.

A Nurse Practitioner can help with:

- Physical/medical exams

- Sexual Health, education, STI testing

- Mental Health concerns

- Birth control, PAPs, pregnancy testing

- Gender affirming primary care for trans and non-binary students

- Immunizations

- Chronic health concerns (asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc)

- Cold, sore throat, and flu

- Musculoskeletal injuries

- Skin conditions, warts, and moles treatments

- Third-party medical exams including those for school, insurance, driving, and employment

Naturopathic Doctor

Naturopathic services are available at Student Health and Wellness for Lakehead students, staff, and faculty, provided by Dr. Tina Tebokkel, ND. These services are fee-based and are not included in Student Health and Wellness fees or covered by provincial or international student health plans. However, they may be reimbursable through extended health benefits or can be accessed out-of-pocket.

About Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic doctors are regulated health professionals.

Naturopathic Doctors can provide:

  • An individualized approach to health care, as every patient is unique

  • Time with patients, in order to better understand the issues at hand

  • A physical exam much like a medical doctor

  • Requests for, and review of lab tests

  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health concerns

 

Therapies that may be used as part of your treatment plan include:

  • Diet and Nutrition counselling

  • Nutritional Supplements

  • Botanical (Herbal) Medicine

  • Acupuncture

 Chiropractor

Chiropractor appointments are available at Student Health and Wellness for Lakehead students, staff, and faculty, provided by Dr. Tara Brown from Back to Function. These services are fee-based and are not included in Student Health and Wellness fees or covered by provincial or international student health plans. However, they may be reimbursable through extended health benefits or can be accessed out-of-pocket. 

Chiropractors can help with headaches, neck and back pain, sports injuries, foot pain, exercise, physical
rehabilitation, and more.

Fees: The student rate is $60/appointment. Costs are covered by most health benefit plans.

Appointments with Dr. Tara Brown are available at the Lakehead Orillia Wellness Centre or at the Back to Function Clinic: 26 Colborne St E, Orillia.

Please go to the nearest hospital emergency department if the matter is urgent. For other issues, use Health Connect Ontario to speak to a registered nurse, or visit your nearest walk-in clinic.
