New Programs

The Protocol for New Program Approvals (Section 3 of the IQAP) applies to all new undergraduate and graduate for-credit programs. The Protocol includes both internal and external review procedures, followed by a review by the Appraisal Committee of the Quality Council (QC). The QC has the authority to approve or decline new program proposals.

Early consultation with the Deputy Provost and the Office of Institutional Planning and Analysis is encouraged in order to determine if submission of the proposal to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU; previously Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD)) is necessary. If deemed necessary, the new program will need to meet both the Lakehead University IQAP requirements and the MTCU requirements.

New Programs require internal review and approval by Faculty Council(s), Senate Standing Committees (SAC (SAC-QA), SUSC or Graduate Studies Council Regulation/Program Sub-Committee, and SBC, as appropriate) and final Senate approval. New Programs also require an external review including Site Visit, review by the QC, and review by the MTCU.

Our What is a New Program? page will help guide you into determining if your proposed program is in fact a New Program or if it is a Major Modification.

For templates related to New Program Approval processes, see our Resources for New Programs page.

Can this be expedited?

Some new programs are eligible for Expedited Review (see Section 4 of the IQAP). Early consultation with the Deputy Provost is recommended.
