Medical Services

All registered part-time and full-time Lakehead University students are eligible to access medical care through Student Health and Wellness. Our team of nurses and physicians provides confidential, student-centred care for a wide range of health concerns.

Below is a summary of the services we offer:

What We Treat

We provide primary care for a wide range of common health concerns, including:

  • Sexual health, education, and STI testing

  • Mental health concerns

  • Gender-affirming primary care

  • Immunizations

  • TB tests (for placement only)

  • Chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes)

  • Musculoskeletal injuries

  • Colds, sore throat, and flu

  • Skin conditions

  • Third-party medical exams (e.g., school, insurance, employment, driving)

Services with a Fee

Some services are not covered by provincial or international health plans. Below are common services with fees:

Medical Exams

  • Fit for work: $80

  • Fit for athletics: $80

  • Driver’s medical: $80

Other Services

  • Sick notes (for work): $20

  • Liquid nitrogen treatment: $5

Travel Health

  • Assessment: $60

  • Injections: $30

Gender Affirming Care
  • All physicians can refill hormone therapy prescriptions for trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming clients.
  • All physicians can provide supporting documentation for changing sex designations on your birth registration and birth certificate.
  • Dr. Hillary Chen can initiate and monitor hormone therapy and make referrals for transition-related surgeries in Ontario.
Psychiatry Referrals 
Student Health and Wellness provides comprehensive medical and supportive care for mental health challenges. The healthcare provider is available to diagnose and treat many psychiatric concerns and can refer you to our psychiatrist as necessary. The main role of the psychiatrist is to provide a one-time diagnostic and/or medication consultation. Psychiatry appointments are covered by OHIP and referrals are at the discretion of the healthcare provider. If you are interested in receiving medical care for a mental health challenge, please call Student Health and Wellness to make an appointment with the health care provider. 

Planning for Your Visit

Whether it’s your first time visiting or you're a returning patient, we want to make it easy for you to get the care you need. Below you’ll find everything you need to know about booking an appointment, getting ready for your visit, using our secure online platform (Medeo), and what to expect after your appointment.

How to Book an Appointment

New Patients:

Please complete our Intake Form, which will then redirect you to Medeo to book your appointment online. Please sign up for Medeo using your @lakeheadu email address and be sure to include your student number in the booking.

**Please note that online booking is only monitored during business hours (i.e. if you book after 4.30 pm you will receive your confirmation when we open at 8.45 am the following business day).

What to Expect When Booking
  • You’ll be asked for the general reason for your visit (e.g., physical, STI testing, mental health concern). This helps us book the right amount of time for your appointment.

  • Longer visits (e.g., physicals, cervical screening) may require additional time.

Getting Ready for Your Appointment
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete paperwork, if it’s your first visit.

  • Bring your health card or UHIP card — we can't complete your appointment without a valid card.

  • If you’re late, your appointment may need to be rescheduled.

Rescheduling or Cancelling a Visit

To make sure everyone gets the care they need, we ask that you cancel or reschedule your appointment by 4:00 pm the business day before your appointment.

If you miss your appointment without giving us that heads-up, your healthcare provider will charge a no-show fee.

Managing Your Care Online with Medeo

Medeo is a secure online healthcare platform used by Student Health and Wellness to:

  • Book and manage appointments

  • Hold virtual visits

  • Exchange secure messages

  • Share documents, forms, and test results

After completing the intake form or registering as a returning patient, you'll access Medeo through your browser on the Medeo desktop site or the Medeo mobile app. Use your @lakeheadu.ca email address when signing up and be sure to check the platform regularly.

If your provider messages you through Medeo, you’ll receive an email notification from noreply@medeohealth.com. These are not spam — they let you know there's a secure message waiting. Learn more about how to view a secure message if you're unsure what to do next.

After Your Visit

If your provider ordered any testing during your appointment, please note that Student Health and Wellness will only follow up if further action is required. If your results are normal and no follow-up is needed, you will not be contacted. In other words, no news is good news.

If your provider does need to contact you, you’ll receive a phone call or a secure message through Medeo. Medeo will send an email notification from noreply@medeohealth.com letting you know that a new message is waiting. Be sure to check your inbox and monitor your Medeo dashboard, as failing to open or respond to these messages may delay your care.
