Assistive Technology

Students may have accommodations for the use of assistive technology to remove barriers in “writing” or “reading” a test/exam/quiz; the use of this technology could be for physical, cognitive, vision, or medical/pain related functional limitations of a disability and/or medical condition.

Any student provided an accommodation that involves assistive technology will have met with and been trained on the use of the assistive technology by an SAS Advisor or SAS Assistive Technologist. The accommodation letter will list the assistive technology accommodations required (for example):

  • Computer with spell or grammar check (provided by SAS for tests written in person with SAS)

  • Computer with voice to text (provided by SAS for tests written in person with SAS)

  • Computer with text to voice (provided by SAS for tests written in person with SAS)

  • Computer without spell or grammar check (provided by SAS for tests written in person with SAS)

In Person Tests/Exams/Quizzes

If the test/exam/quiz is in person the student is responsible to book the test/exam/quiz with SAS following SAS guidelines for requesting testing accommodations.

  • SAS will coordinate the equipment required, load the test/exam/quiz, ensure the appropriate software is available and schedule invigilators that are trained in supervising tests/exams/quizzes using assistive software.

Online Tests/Exams/Quizzes

If the test/exam/quiz is online, the student would use the assistive technology on their own device.

  • Instructors are responsible for ensuring that their test/exam/quiz is accessible for assistive technology. Resources for how to make course materials accessible can be found on the SAS Webpage. If you require further assistance please contact the Teaching Commons.

Students are advised to contact their SAS Advisor with questions or concerns regarding the use of assistive technology for an online test/exam/quiz.
