Accommodated Extra Time
Students with approved accommodated extra time have provided SAS with medical documentation that supports an accommodation of extra time to assist the student in overcoming barriers in a test taking environment. These recommendations are related to the student's functional limitations including: cognitive ability/memory skills, academic functioning, attention and behaviour, executive functioning, and/or adaptive functioning.
The accommodation letter may state one or more of the following accommodations;
Extra Time (Paper-Based): xx additional minutes per hour for all tests/exams
Extra time for Bellringer Assessments: xx additional minutes per hour for all bellringer tests/exams/quizzes
Extra Time (Online): xx additional minutes per hour for all online tests/exams/quizzes (Prof to add time to student acct)
Extra Time (Online with Breaks): xx additional minutes per hour (including approved breaks) for all online tests/exams/quizzes: (Prof. to add time to student account)
Which accommodation applies depends on the delivery method of the assessment; Is it in person, is it a bellringer, is it online?
Instructors can refer to the Faculty Resource - Calculating Extra Time for Students with Accommodations to assist with calculating accommodated extra time.
| Extra Time in In Person Tests/Exams/Quizzes |
Students with accommodated extra time writing in person/on campus tests/quizzes/exams are responsible to register to write these assessments with the SAS office.
|
| Extra Time in Bell Ringer Tests/Exams |
Students are responsible to email their instructor to request accommodated extra time for a bell ringer assessment prior to the bell ringer assessment. The instructor/lab instructor will organize and confidentially communicate to the student a separate bell ringer date/time for students with accommodated extra time.
|
| Extra Time in Online Tests/Exams/Quizzes |
For online tests/quizzes/exams the instructor is responsible to adjust the accommodated time according to the Online or Online with Breaks extra time accommodation listed on the student’s Accommodation Letter.
Instructors can refer to the Faculty Resource - Calculating Extra Time for Students with Accommodations to assist with calculating accommodated extra time.
Students are encouraged by SAS to reach out directly to their instructor (in person, chat, email) if they sign into an assessment and do not see that they have had their accommodated extra added;
For more information on Online Tests/Exams/Quizzes please see Providing Test/Exam/Quiz Accommodations by Delivery Method. |
| Schedule conflicts in accessing Test/Exam/Quiz accommodations due to accommodated extra time |
Students may have back to back classes/labs that create a conflict in accessing their full test/exam/quiz accommodations (accommodated extra time/breaks) for a scheduled test/exam/quiz date. This can apply to in person or online tests. ex. A student has a class 10:00 am - 11:30 am with a test scheduled for the full class time and a class immediately after at 11:30 am - 1:00 pm. The student has an accommodation of Extra Time: 30 additional minutes per hour, which means they have an additional 45 minutes of time on this test. Using all of their time will result in them being late for their next class. Students with accommodations should not be disadvantaged by the use of their accommodations. This student may request to start their test early, at 9:15 am, to allow them access to their full accommodation for extra time and the ability to attend their next class.
