DNA Testing Services
Lakehead University’s Paleo-DNA Laboratory is a leader in mitochondrial DNA research, continually improving our methodology, sensitivity and detection methods for DNA examination. Services include both nuclear (STR and Y-STR) and mitochondrial DNA analysis on a variety of sample types. With our expertise in the ancient DNA field, we have developed many protocols to aid in the extraction, purification and amplification of DNA from highly degraded materials. Sample types include modern samples such as blood, semen and saliva (buccal or cheek swab, chewing gum, cigarette butts, stamps, envelopes) to more degraded samples including teeth, hair, bone and tissue. Experience gained through the analysis of very difficult to work with, exceptionally degraded material allows us to offer very high quality genetic analytical services. In addition, we offer a wide range of molecular services for materials of both modern and ancient samples. Other services include: twin zygosity testing, siblingship testing, archaeological testing, sequencing, fragment analysis and real-time PCR.
The lab has been working on cold casework for national law enforcement organizations using mitochondrial DNA analysis since its inception. More recently the Paleo-DNA Lab has been involved with profiling hair samples for the RCMP and Provincial Police. The laboratory’s extensive experience in mitochondrial DNA analysis was created through the analysis of exceptionally degraded or ancient material. Applying the techniques used on ancient material to other fields has made the Paleo-DNA lab a leader in mitochondrial DNA analysis.
