ATRC specializes in regulatory testing-monitoring the effect of effluents on aquatic organisms from pulp and paper mills, mines and related industrial discharges in Northwestern Ontario. ATRC offers a full range of toxicity testing services to industry and government. Services include acute testing with rainbow trout and water fleas.

The ATRC has been operating at Lakehead University since 1970. The acute test, now a tool that is used to monitor environmental discharges across Canada was developed at Lakehead University from the 'bag test' by Professor George Ozburn in association with the Canadian Environmental Protection Services.
