Reporting to the Vice-President (Administration and Finance), the AVP Financial Services is accountable for leading the Financial Services team in managing the university’s financial and accounting policies, systems and processes, and tax and regulatory requirements.  The incumbent will provide advice to the University Senior Leadership team on best practices and the optimal utilization of the University’s financial resources in matters such as budgets, contracts, financial management reporting and purchasing matters.  Ensuring compliance and maintaining internal controls to adhere to financial legislation, generally accepted accounting principles, policies and procedures, and to the terms of the Provincial and Federal Funding Agreements are key roles within this position.  The Associate Vice-President (Financial Services) oversees the relationship with the external auditors and regulatory authorities.

The AVP Financial Services provides leadership and operational oversight in the financial management of the University, including financial reporting, cash management, management of endowed funds, research accounting, accounts payable, procurement services, pension services, payroll services, student receivables and the Campus Bookstores. The incumbent also plays a key role in the establishment of the operating and ancillary strategic budget plans and provides support to Senior University Administration and to Board Committees on finance, accounting, investments, budget related matters and provides recommendations concerning the University’s financial risks and opportunities.  Through developing department goals and objectives, the incumbent will create short and long term plans for the financial success of the University, and monitor and evaluate the progress in achieving these plans.

As the ideal candidate for this senior-level position will be an accomplished who can manage high functioning teams.  Additionally, you are a Chartered Professional Accountant with more than ten years of experience in progressive leadership roles, preferably in a post-secondary environment.  You have expert knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, accounting theory and practice, including relevant legislation as it relates to the Public Sector.  You also have experience in process improvement and change management especially relating to ERP systems. The successful candidate will have exceptional critical thinking skills to solve problems, set priorities and deadlines to ensure multiple projects and objectives.

-       University Degree and demonstrated expertise in the field

-       Exceptional interpersonal, leadership and team building skills

-       Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with strong decision making skills

-       Familiarity with academic organizational culture, administration and collegial governance would be considered an asset.

-       Ability to achieve continuous improvement and to exemplify customer service focus.
