Lakehead University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Facilities Manager within the Physical Plant. Based in picturesque Thunder Bay, the regional capital of Northwestern Ontario which is located in the center of Canada and with close proximity to the United States, the Facilities Manager position is ideally for someone who is passionate about ensuring a safe and clean environment through the maintenance of university buildings, elevators, and Grounds.

Reporting to the Director of Physical Plant, the Facilities Manager is responsible for the supervision of the daily activities of the work force within the Building Maintenance, Grounds, Shipping/Receiving and Housekeeping Departments.  Through regular inspection of the University buildings and grounds, they will develop maintenance plans, prepare estimates for material and labour required, hire contractors, and oversee all work done.

 

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain operating procedures and safety manuals for new equipment or procedures
  • Administer the University's collective agreements with C.A.W on behalf of Physical Plant.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies, materials, tools and equipment to ensure an efficient operation.
  • Performance management of staff, and ensure proper safety technique, policies and procedures are being met
  • Undertake the necessary maintenance work to ensure the buildings are safe, clean and properly maintained
  • Create tender for elevator consultant and work with them to create tender for elevator maintenance contractor
  • Perform project administration, accounting and quality assurance including retention and coordination of consultant and maintenance contractor contracts

 

Qualifications

 

  • Under-graduate degree in Facilities Management, Planning, Architecture, Engineering or similar field
  • Minimum five years of demonstrated experience within the Building Maintenance, Grounds, Shipping/Receiving and Housekeeping Departments, preferably within a university setting.
  • Experience and knowledge of preventative maintenance for buildings
  • Knowledge of building and fire codes, health and safety acts and other legislation and standards
  • The incumbent must have strong supervisory skills including comfort and expertise in leading in a unionised environment.
  • Experience leading cross-organizational projects from inception to evaluation stage as well as experience working with a variety of stakeholders
  • The successful candidate must be able to practice good judgment, effective time management and be a team player in a high paced, challenging environment with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Candidates must be competent in in Microsoft Access, excel, project and word
