The Administrative & Programs Officer has a broad portfolio with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives. The Officer is a strong administrator and assists the Vice Provost in managing multiple units within the Office of Indigenous Initiatives. The Officer is the key person in helping build and manage external relationships and projects with the Vice Provost. The Officer directly reports to the Vice Provost of Office of Indigenous Initiatives and the Niijii Indigenous Mentorship Program Coordinator as well as supports and works collaboratively with the Indigenous Outreach & Recruitment Coordinator and supports the Indigenous Access Programs Coordinator on an as needed basis. The Officer also provides administrative support to committees such as the SAC-OIEC, ICR Provost Task Force Committee and other initiatives.

 

The Administrative & Programs Officer will require an undergraduate degree with office experience as this position requires a fundamental understanding of the day-to-day functions in a higher education setting. The ability to clearly communicate both orally and in written form is essential, as well as having extensive working knowledge using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).  The incumbent will have critical thinking skills, priority setting and research skills, the ability to manage sensitive and confidential information appropriately, and general knowledge of all faculties and departments at the university. This position requires a thorough knowledge of Indigenous peoples of Canada which include: First Nations, Status and Non-Status, Métis, and Inuit. As well as Indigenous community organizations, current political climate, political territorial organizations (PTO's), etc. These include all the organizations that are part of the Ogimaawin Indigenous Education Council (OIEC) such as Nishnawbe Aski Nation which represents 49 First Nations across Ontario as well as the Métis Nation of Ontario. Knowledge of cultural protocols and social interactions is also required. This includes working with Elders, preparing sacred medicines by following the appropriate protocols such as offering tobacco, knowledge of ceremonies, i.e. Sweat Lodge Ceremony, Approaching Drum Groups for Convocation and special events, etc.
