As part of Lakehead University International (LUI) this position reports to the Director, International Student Services (ISSC), the incumbent provides support and carries out strategic directions established by the Director for student services, support, success, and retention of international students. This includes key responsibility for overseeing International Student Orientation and Transitioning to Lakehead including playing a key role in participating in creating an inclusive campus wide orientation for new international students. This position is responsible for coordinating and ensuring all international student events (in person and online) including ISSC staff programming for students is seamless and wholistic. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the ISS to ensure it is a welcoming attractive inclusive space for students. This position is holds key responsibilities for overseeing Quarantine protocols in relation to the pandemic, including being the first point of contact for new incoming students to provide up to date travel, vaccination requirements, and orientation communication. This position is responsible for refreshing and overseeing the International students D2L pre-arrival modules including marketing and completion of these modules as part of student transitioning. This position also ensures the smooth operation of the Lakehead Makes Leaders program and coordinates International Education week and other cultural and EDI events. Works in coordination with other LUI departments to coordinate international student arrivals and resolve student issues or concerns. Carries a 24-hour arrival phone on call to handle emerging situations with student arrivals at the border, coordination with residence including ensuring LUI’s quarantine processes regarding changing provincial and federal pandemic and vaccination guideline updates are incorporated, and communicated to students and staff as required.  In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the generation and maintenance of data, social media platforms, etc., to support international student retention and success as well as supporting enrolment planning and managing incoming student numbers. In addition, the incumbent works with key stakeholders both within and outside of the University to improve the functionality and logistics of student arrivals, coordinating student services within the ISS such as: ongoing programming to address student physical, mental, social, academic, financial, and immigration needs, overseeing a team of Student Assistants working in the Centre, coordinating the Peer Mentor program, and ensuring quality of student services, orientation, and other programming as part of retention. Also responsible for coordination of International Student Services with other Lakehead departments: Recruitment, English Language Centre, International Relations, and Orillia campus. This position works in key support of international student retention, attrition, and working closely with residence, domestic Student Affairs, the RISIA advising team, and others to problem solve international student issues and concerns.

 

The ISSC will possess an Undergraduate degree with a minimum of 3 years’ experience at the PSE level dealing with international students. The incumbent will be a strong relationship builder and have maintenance skills; demonstrated commitment, initiative, and a strong creative ability, ability to juggle multiple conflicting priorities, dedication to service excellence and quality. Demonstrated project management experience is required. Highly developed analytical problem-solving skills, solid organizational skills, good relationship building and soft skills, and the ability to communicate complex and confidential information in an understandable way is also required. The incumbent will have well-developed research skills and the ability to collect and manage large data sets, as well as exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills including relationship building, conflict resolution, ability to work in a multi-functional environment and demonstrate sound judgment. Experience in working with a cross-functional team is a must. Ability to succeed in a dynamic, changing environment and quickly find alternative solutions to challenges. Attention to detail and in-depth planning, organizational and time management skills, including ability to handle multiple tasks or projects simultaneously. High proficiency with Excel, google docs, Zoom, social media, google forms, and other relevant software and applications. Second language ability is an asset. Highly sensitive to cultural diversity, needs and requirements.
