Primarily an 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. shift, Monday to Friday

When required, hours of work may be modified to address the needs of the University

 

 

DUTIES:

  • Receives and unloads incoming goods, assisting the Receiver/Shipper Lead Hand in recording relevant goods information and maintaining records;
  • Enters appropriate information into the computer database;
  • Loads trucks in preparation for delivery;
  • Unloads trucks subsequent to pickup of goods; 
  • Moves goods, by truck, between University buildings and between the University and off‑campus locations;
  • Moves goods within buildings by hand, cart and/or dolly to/from pickup/drop-off points;
  • Packs, labels and loads goods being shipped by the University and assists the Receiver/Shipper Lead Hand in completing/maintaining shipping records, including Transportation of Dangerous Goods documentation;
  • Operates and maintains appropriate machinery, e.g. truck and forklift;
  • Works in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS Regulation, other health and safety related legislation and standards and with such workplace practices as outlined by his/her immediate supervisor;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education;
  • Experience in shipping and receiving practices;
  • Must have current WHMIS training, Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification, defensive driving certification as well as forklift certification or must be certified during trial period;
  • Must have a current valid driver’s licence of the appropriate class with a clean driving abstract;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including performing heavy manual work such as lifting, carrying and/or pushing/pulling heavy objects up to 100 lbs on a daily basis as well as performing very heavy work in excess of 100 lbs on an occasional basis;
  • General knowledge of recognized practices, safe work habits and techniques, including traffic laws and defensive driving principles;
  • Some clerical ability required, including computer skills/aptitude;
  • Ability to deal courteously with staff, students and the general public;
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, its regulations and other health and safety related legislation and standards.

           

A conditional offer of employment will be extended to the successful applicant.  On evidence that a candidate is able to meet the physical demands of the essential duties of the job, as determined through the completion of a pre-employment screening, a final offer of employment will be extended to the candidate.  The screening will be based on the Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) of the job. A copy of this will be available prior to interviews.
