RELIGIOUS STUDIES 3501 YDE:  Special Topics:  Religion and Film

Course Description:  Religious Studies 3501 YDE: This course will look at the religious dimension of films from two perspectives:  1) the representational, in which the film represents a theme or principle from a specific religious tradition (Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, for example); and 2) the cultural, in which the film shows how there is a religious dimension in all of life’s experiences.  The narrative nature of religion, the search for deeper meaning in life, the relationship between science and religion, the quandary of good and evil, suffering and joy, the incarnation of awe, wonder and imagination, will be explored in an attempt to discover what Mircea Eliade calls “heirophanies” - disclosures of the transcendent and sacred in everyday life."
