Academic Standing

What is Academic Standing?

Every Spring, you are assessed by your department and assigned an Academic Standing based on the courses you took over the past year. To determine your standing, your grades are assessed against University, Faculty and Program requirements and regulations.

Your Academic Standing is not recorded on your official transcript, but it helps keep you informed about your progress and determines whether you are in good standing, able to continue conditionally or on probation, or if you are ineligible to continue in your current program.

How is Academic Standing Communicated?

Academic Standing is released prior to course registration opening for the next academic year, to ensure you have time to meet with your Program Chair or a Student Central Professional if necessary.

You’ll receive an email letting you know your Academic Standing is available for viewing, at which time you can access it in myPortal by clicking Student > Academic Profile > My Program Details & Academic Standing.

What Does My Academic Standing Mean?

Eligible to Continue

You have met the minimum requirements for your program.

Next Steps: You can register for the next academic year when course registration opens, but it’s still a good idea to review your progress and connect with a Student Central Professional to discuss your goals.

Proceed Conditionally

Your marks may be below the required average of your program, or you may be missing requirements. You may continue in your program under the condition that you raise your average and complete any missing requirements in the next academic year.

Next Steps: You can register for courses when registration opens, but it’s a good idea to meet with your Program Chair or a Student Central Professional to discuss ways to get back on track.

Probation

Your average is too low. You can continue in your program, but if you do not increase your average to meet the minimum requirement after one year, you may be required to change programs by your department.

Next Steps: You can register for courses when registration opens, but it is strongly recommended that you meet with your Program Chair or a Student Central Professional to discuss ways to be successful moving forward.

Select a Major

You must declare a major for your program.

Next Steps: You must meet with a Student Central Professional to select a major before proceeding with course registration for the next academic year.

Failed Year

You are not eligible to proceed to the next year level as you have failed some or all of the courses you took in the past year.

Next Steps: Your next steps are dependent on the regulations of your program. Before registering for the next academic year, you’ll need to meet with your Program Chair or a Student Central Professional to determine which courses you need to repeat and how to get back on track. Student Central can also help you explore other paths that may better suit your interests and academic strengths.

Ineligible Without Consultation

Your average is significantly below the minimum program requirement – if you do not increase your average moving forward, you may not be able to graduate.

Next Steps: Before registering for the next academic year, you must consult with your Program Chair or a Student Central Professional to determine ways to get back on track. If you’re interested in exploring a different path, a Student Central Professional can help with that as well.

I've Been Informed I Need to Change Programs. What Now?

You may be required to change programs by your department if you receive a standing of Ineligible Without Consultation, or if you receive a standing of Probation or Failed Year multiple times.

If you are required to change programs, you will receive a separate email with further information. You’ll need to meet with a Student Central Professional to change your program and won’t be able to register for courses until you do so.

In some cases, a program change may be as simple as switching from an Honours program to a Bachelor's program in the same area of study. In other cases, you may need to choose a different program altogether.

While it may feel daunting to receive an Academic Standing other than Eligible to Continue, remember that it’s meant to help you stay informed. We have many resources and supports to help you get back on track, as well as many pathways to help you achieve your goals.

If you have any questions after receiving your Academic Standing, reach out to your Program Chair.
