Workers Day of Mourning - April 28, 2025
On April 28th, in accordance with the Workers Day of Mourning Act, 2016 (S.O. 2016, c. 14), Lakehead University will lower the Canadian and Ontario flags to half-mast to recognize the annual Workers Day of Mourning.
This day serves as a solemn reminder of the approximately 1,000 Canadian workers who lose their lives each year due to workplace incidents, as well as the countless others who suffer injuries or occupational illnesses. The legislation mandates that flags at government and affiliated public institutions—including those in the education sector to be flown at half-mast as a public act of remembrance and respect.
More importantly, April 28 represents an opportunity for all of us to reaffirm our commitment to improving workplace health and safety, with the goal of preventing future injuries and loss of life.
This small but meaningful gesture demonstrates our responsibility not only to honour those affected by workplace tragedies, but also to actively protect our current and future employees.
To support our ongoing commitment to occupational health and safety, our safety team is available to provide guidance, answer questions, and offer assistance as needed.
