Primarily an 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. shift, Monday to Friday.
When required, hours of work and location may be modified to address the needs of the University.
DUTIES:
- Participates in the moving and setup of furniture for University functions; the floor maintenance programs for all University buildings using the appropriate mechanical equipment as required; the maintenance of washroom sanitation levels; removal of refuse from University buildings; dusting or washing furniture, desks, fixtures, walls, windows, etc.; inspection and replacement of burnt out lights;
- Responsible for minor work tasks relative to the maintenance and repair of University buildings, equipment and furniture;
- Participates in providing absenteeism coverage as required or directed by the Supervisor;
- Provides mentoring to Caretakers and Custodians;
- Direct and delegate work from the Supervisor to Caretakers in a fair manner;
- Assists the Supervisor with inspect assigned work areas and institutes corrective measures to ensure a satisfactory performance level is maintained;
- Prepare necessary reports and maintain records and files as required by the Supervisor;
- Work in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS Regulation, other health and safety related legislation and standards and with such workplace practices as outlined by the immediate Supervisor;
- Perform regular Caretaker duties in designated area;
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Grade 12 education;
- Experience in custodial work;
- Must have a good work record and good record of attendance and punctuality;
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written;
- Some experience in training, directing and delegating ;
- Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including ability to perform heavy manual work consisting of lifting, carrying and pushing/pulling (e.g. moving furniture) and very heavy work in excess of 100lbs on an occasional basis (e.g. carrying couches up stairs);
- Ability to operate and control a variety of equipment such as wet/dry vacuums, scrubbers, buffing machines, carpet extractors, auto scrubbers, etc;
- Knowledge of the general maintenance program for equipment and an aptitude for general maintenance functions, gained through previous experience or during the trial period (e.g. checking and cleaning connections, filling batteries, etc);
- General knowledge of recognized practices and safe work habits and techniques employed in custodian work;
- Must have current WHMIS training or must successfully complete training during the trial/probation period.
- Must have a valid driver’s license;
- Ability to deal courteously with staff, students and the general public;
- Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, its regulations and other health and safety related legislation and standards.
