A 14-month, full-time technician position is available in the Department of Biology, Thunder Bay

campus. The successful applicant will provide laboratory support for multiple undergraduate

courses, spanning various academic programs and year levels. The successful applicant will be a

primary resource for increasing our students understanding of biological concepts, while also

working closely with course instructors as a crucial part of Lakehead Biology's experiential

learning. The successful applicant will also supervise teaching assistants and promote a safe

learning environment during laboratory and field course-related activities.

 

This position will support both introductory and upper-level courses with an emphasis on plant

and animal organismal biology. A non-exhaustive list could include Introduction to Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity, Indigenous Ethnobotany, Biology of Fishes, Ornithology, and the Field Course in Aquatic Ecology. This last course takes place during the summer at the IISD – ELA research facility

located west of Dryden and requires the technician to stay at the facility for 2-3 weeks. The

successful applicant must have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card at the time of appointment.

Certifications such as Certified Wildlife Biologist and Wilderness First Aid are an asset.

 

In addition to providing course support the successful candidate will provide curatorial support

for the Claude E. Garton Herbarium; as such, the candidate should be capable of working with

and identifying local flora. The Claude E. Garton Herbarium is a collection of over 110,000

plants including approximately 1000 species from the Thunder Bay area. The associated

responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing and maintaining research and teaching

collections, facilitating research, supervision of volunteers and students, and overseeing a

continuing project to digitize the collections. Experience in a herbarium or museum setting

would be beneficial.

 

In addition to course preparation and support, Biology technicians also perform community

service, outreach, and administrative duties including training undergraduate and graduate

students as teaching assistants. Previous experience with public speaking and event

organization is a requirement of this position. Candidates should be enthusiastic about science

and education. Well-developed interpersonal skills are a must. Much of the applicant’s time will

be spent working closely with students and faculty.

 

Applicants must possess an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Biology or a similar science, as well as teaching and

other work-related experience relevant to the courses they will support. They must also be

willing and able to work flexible hours in the lab and in the field, be comfortable working with students, and be able to deal with ambiguity and tight deadlines. Experience working with First

nations communities would be an asset.
