Home Base:  Housekeeping Department, Physical Plant

Primarily a 6:00 am – 2:00 pm shift

Monday to Friday

When required, hours of work and location may be modified to suit the needs of the University

 

DUTIES:

1.     Performs a wide variety of tasks in Physical Plant related to custodial, light maintenance (bulbs, light fixtures, caulking, etc) and grounds (shovelling snow, sand/salt at building entrances), The principal responsibilities are outlined on the position descriptions for Custodian I  (approximately 30 hours per week) and Caretaker (approximately 10 hours per week).

2.     Maintains floors in University buildings by mopping, vacuuming, washing, stripping, waxing and buffing; cleaning carpets using appropriate equipment.

3.     Moves furniture in classrooms, offices and other areas as directed

4.     Cleans and sanitizes washrooms and replenishes supplies;

5.     Dusts or washes furnishing, desks, fixtures, walls, windows, etc.

6.     Removes refuse and garbage, cleans containers and disposal unit

7.     Reports fire, vandalism and other matters of an irregular nature to supervisors or to Security

8.     Works in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS Regulations, other health & safety-related legislation & standards and with such workplace practices as outlined by his/her immediate supervisor.

9.     Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.     Minimum Grade 12 education

2.     Experience in custodial, groundwork (related to snow removal), use of small hand tools

3.     Must have a current, valid driver’s licence of the appropriate class, with a good driving record.

4.     Must have the following certifications (or the ability to complete certifications during the trial/probationary period): WHMIS,

5.     Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

6.     Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling heavy objects (occasionally over 100 lbs.), working at heights (scaffolding and ladders), awkward positions, kneeling, and perform overhead work.

7.     General knowledge of recognized practices and safe work habits and techniques employed in grounds maintenance, custodial work, and electrical work

8.     Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations and other health and safety related legislation and standards.

9.     Ability to operate the appropriate machinery for the position (e.g. scrubbers, carpet extractors, etc.)

10.   Aptitude for general maintenance functions.

11.   Ability to deal courteously with staff, students and the general public.     

12.   Proven good work record, attendance and punctuality

 

A conditional offer of employment will be extended to the successful applicant.  On evidence that a candidate is able to meet the physical demands of the essential duties of the job, as determined through the completion of a pre-employment screening, a final offer of employment will be extended to the candidate.  The screening will be based on the Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) of the job.
