This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).  The successful candidate will be expected to work 40 hours / 5 days per week (day shift).  When required, hours and/or days of work may be modified to address the needs of the University

DUTIES:

  • Performs mechanical maintenance work through the University's computerized work order system. 
  • Inspects, investigates and solves problems related to the operation of both the mechanical systems and equipment, providing technical advice as necessary.
  • Performs skilled mechanical work on HVAC, refrigeration, heating systems or plumbing at the journeyman level.
  • Provides estimates of work for repairs to mechanical systems on campus.
  • Makes necessary reports and keeps records and files as required or work orders, requisitions, upgrades and changes to systems etc.
  • Takes every precaution reasonable in the circumstance for the protection of the workers in his charge.
  • Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, with other health and safety related legislation and standards, and with such workplace practices as outlined by his immediate supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned from time to time.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of recognized practices and techniques and the use of tools, equipment and instruments common to the Mechanical Trades. 
  • Ability to install, overhaul and adjust systems from sketches, blueprints or specifications: ability to prepare sketches and or diagrams for blueprints.
  • Should have a thorough knowledge of the theory and operation of pneumatic and electrical controls as well as a working knowledge of the theory, principles and operation of HVAC, heating and plumbing systems.
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to do heavy physical labour on occasion and to work on ladders, scaffolds, lift devices and in crawl spaces, etc.
  • Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and other health and safety related legislation and standards.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • Minimum of five years of directly related journeyman experience in a Maintenance position.
  • Must possess a valid journeyman licence, certificate of qualification in but not limited to:
  • Plumbing, Refrigeration or Air-Conditioning Mechanic.
  • Must possess a valid gasfitter 2 certificate or greater.
  • Preferred to have a current Ozone Depletion Prevention Certificate (ODP)
  • Must possess a valid driver's licence.
