Overview


Positions at this level perform varied or more complex technical tasks requiring formal training, specialized knowledge and/or experience. Conduct standard research activities which normally require technical expertise and knowledge of highly specialized instrumentation/systems and require a high degree of independence to ensure the efficient day-to-day running of the laboratory and equipment. Coordinate and conduct experiments according to established methods and procedures, but requires some knowledge of related scientific theory and practices.

Responsibilities


Job Characteristics:

  • Provide HIFIS training and support for the Thunder Bay HIFIS users and Coordinated Housing Access Table member organizations.
  • Perform ongoing HIFIS maintenance tasks.
  • Represent as HIFIS data lead at meetings with community partners and stakeholders.
  • Work with Community Entities and Coordinated Access Lead to oversees planning, implementation and ongoing monitoring of Coordinated Access.
  • Assist in reporting to federal government and preparing community-facing reports.
  • Work closely with all employees in the HIFIS / CHAT Data Lead to respond to community reporting needs and for related research activities.
  • Assist in research related to HIFIS data.

Working Environment:
Work is performed in various settings, including laboratories, offices, or outdoor fi eld environments, with potential exposure to outdoor elements, hazardous materials, chemicals, or machinery. The role requires judgment and initiative in applying scientific principles, ensuring compliance with research objectives, and collaborating with team members across departments.

 

Responsible for the design, execution, and evaluation of scientific experiments and research activities, including the construction, operation, and maintenance of complex equipment. Utilizes advanced technical expertise to translate research concepts into working models or prototypes, adapting or modifying instruments as necessary to meet project requirements. Provides consultation to researchers and students on the appropriate use of equipment and data collection standards.

Tasks involve conducting experiments using specialized procedures such as animal surgery, clinical health assessments, or statistical modeling. The role requires maintaining quality control protocols, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, managing calibration and testing, and adjusting systems to meet research goals. Researches and implements new techniques, offers feasibility recommendations, and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to administration, equipment usage and safety.

Responsibilities include data management, such as preliminary data analysis, summarizing findings, and preparing reports, manuscripts, and presentations for conferences or publications. The role may involve developing data collection protocols, maintaining databases, and conducting audits to ensure accuracy. Additional duties include assisting in participant recruitment and contributing to the development of research protocols for interviews, questionnaires, and focus groups.

The role involves training research staff and students on procedures and equipment use while ensuring adherence to safety standards. May involve scheduling and reviewing the work of junior staff . Operates under general supervision, with day-to-day decision-making within provided guidelines and consulting on deviations from protocols.

 

 

Qualifications


University degree in a relevant discipline, with some 1-2 years) experience required • Or equivalent combination of education and experience (some roles may require more extensive experience or training in a particular area of research)
