About this Job

As a Research Intern at Lakehead University under the supervision of Dr. Robert Mawhinney, you will play a key role in developing an atomic and fragment model for describing molecular properties. This position will help support the development and implementation of proprietary descriptors obtained from the Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules and incorporate them into the Digital Alliance of Canada supported Retrievium platform (https://retrievium.ca). Specifically, the Research Intern will support the project by identifying various molecular fragments within the Retrievium database, obtain and compile properties for a large selection of molecule, perform quantum chemical calculations using the Gaussian suite of programs available on Digital Alliance of Canada platforms, analyse results and compile atomic and molecular fragment properties using the AIMALL suite of programs, and help develop machine learning algorithms for linking the atomic and molecular fragment features to a molecules properties.

Job Duties

  • The Research Intern will focus specifically on selecting a list of initial molecules from the Retrievium database and compiling their properties
  • Identify common molecular fragments within the selected molecules, perform quantum chemical calculations and analyse results
  • Perform wavefunction analysis to obtain density based atomic and molecular fragment features
  • Prepare a database of features and properties and use it to develop machine learning algorithms
  • Findings are to be disseminated through presentations and drafting of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

Qualifications

  • Must have completed or be in the process of completing a PhD in a related field (e.g., Chemistry, Materials Science, Biotechnology, etc.)
