Extensions on Assignments Accommodation (up to 7 days)

Students with an extension accommodation have provided SAS with medical documentation supporting that periodically the student may experience barriers that impact their ability to meet assignment due dates. Not all students registered with SAS have an extension accommodation; Instructors can refer to the students accommodation letter for confirmation.

Accommodation Wording: May require time extensions for assignments when linked to disability and/or medical condition; Student to provide extension request to Prof. and SAS.

  • Students are to request an extension prior to the due date of an assignment. This extension can be requested once per assignment for up to 7 days without academic penalty. See Exceptional Circumstances for requests outside of these guidelines.

  • Students are provided an Extension Email Template that can be utilized to ensure that all pertinent information is communicated to the instructor.

  • The instructor is welcome to contact the students SAS Advisor with any questions.

There may be assignments where an extension is not possible or a shorter than requested extension may be agreed to by the instructor. Examples include: group assignments, in-class presentations, weekly/biweekly assignments (sometimes online) in which grading is provided immediately after the submission date.

  • Instructors are encouraged to contact the student's SAS Advisor if there are assignments for which there may be a concern about providing an extenison accommodation or for which a shorter than requested extension is necessary.

Exceptional Circumstances

SAS recognizes that there may be significant disability/medical impacts that may result in a delay in requesting an extension or an extension requested for more than 7 days. Students must contact their SAS Advisor for any further request to be considered.

  • The SAS Advisor will consider the disability factors that are impacting the ability to submit the assignment; the attendance and participation in the course to date and any communication with the instructor.

  • The student's SAS Advisor will contact the instructor to discuss options after they have considered the disability factors related to further extensions.

Students are responsible to;

  • Participate in the accommodation process; understand the expectations of the use of the extension accommodation and contact their SAS Advisor if they require assistance or they are having concerns.

  • Take a manageable course load; accommodations do not reduce the workload of a class(es).

  • Develop, at the beginning of each term, a calendar scheduling all important academic responsibility dates (assignments and tests, exams and quizzes).

  • For assistance and skill building in developing a term calendar, scheduling strategies and time management students are encouraged contact Student Success Centre (SSC) and/or review the resources on their webpage.
