Orientation Blue Jays Game: University & College Night in Toronto

Get excited for the Toronto Blue Jays University & College Night at the Rogers Centre! This event is open to students who are new to Lakehead Orillia, including both first-year and transfer students. The event includes free transportation and a game ticket — you’ll just need to cover your own dinner!

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is another Lakehead Blue Jays trip on the same night that is not affiliated with Orientation. Our Alumni Office is also bringing a group of their own to this game, but their trip differs from ours: it is open to all students (ours is for new incoming students only), costs $60–$70 (ours is free), and transportation may not be included (ours has a free bus booked). Please be careful not to confuse the two trips!

UPDATE: All seats for the Blue Jays Orientation Game are now full, and the registration link has been removed. Please contact Madison directly at orillia.ssc@lakeheadu.ca to find out if there have been any cancellations.

We invite ALL new students to our indoor movie and board game night! After a busy day of Orientation, kick back in your comfiest clothes with blankets and new friends for a fun evening of board games, snacks, and a movie! The movie selection will be announced soon—stay tuned for updates! Please note that this event use to be an outdoor event, but has been moved indoors due to weather.

Bonus: Feel free to bring a friend—even if they’re not a Lakehead student! Having a familiar face with you can make it easier to relax, have fun, and spark conversations with other new students.

Kick off your Lakehead journey at The First Howl!

Participate in a variety of activities, games, and more while touring around campus in groups. Have your chance to win prizes, enjoy food, and have an action packed day filled with fun!

Following The First Howl, students will break into their program areas to meet with their Faculty & Program chairs!

Event details:

The day will kick off in lecture theatres before breaking into groups to head through the various activity stations. The day will end with lunch before heading off to meet with your faculty and program staff.

 

Open 6v6 Beach Volleyball Card Tournament

Join us on Sunday, September 7th for our Beach Volleyball Card Tournament hosted by Lakehead Women’s Volleyball & Campus Recreation! Through the use of card tournament style of play, this orientation tournament is designed to allow students to get active, and make new friends! 

Date, Time & Location: This tournament will be held on Sunday, September 7th between 1-5pm! Players are asked to check in at the LU Beach Volleyball courts at 12:45pm in order for games to begin at 1pm! 

 

Card Tournament Structure: 

  • 24 participants will play 6v6 matches on our two beach volleyball courts

    • We will fit as many games as possible into the designated playing time (1pm-5pm)

  • Upon arrival, students will be randomly assigned a playing card - this is yours to keep throughout the tournament! 

  • Before each match, a representative from the LU Women’s Volleyball will shuffle the playing cards and lay out 4 groups of 6 players - these 6 players make up one team! 

  • Players will play with their shuffled team for one match - up to 21 points (cap of 21, no win by 2)

  • If your team wins the match, you will be allotted points based on how many points you won by. For example, if you won your game 21-18, a ‘+3’ will be written on your card

  • If your team loses the match, you will be deducted points based on how many points you lost by. For example, if you lost your game 18-21, a ‘-3’ will be written on your card

    • These steps will be repeated for each match played!

  • At the end of the tournament, the player with the highest score will be the tournament champion!

  • All Intramural Sport Guidelines and Rules for Beach Volleyball (unless stated otherwise) are in effect for this tournament, please review both rulebooks prior to registering!

 

Price: Cost for this tournament is $10.00/player

 

Registration Details: Registration for our tournament will open on August 21st @ 12:01am, and close September 4th @ 11:59pm! Students will need to purchase a Campus Recreation Pass and register on the FusionPLAY app for registration to be considered complete!

Open 3v3 Basketball Tournament

Join us on Sunday, September 14th for our 3v3 Basketball Tournament hosted by Lakehead Basketball & Campus Recreation! Through this exciting style of basketball, this orientation tournament is designed to allow students to get active, and grow friendships! 

Date, Time & Location: This tournament will be held on Sunday, September 14th between 1-5pm! Players are asked to check in at the Wolf Den gym at 12:45pm in order for games to begin at 1pm! 

 

3v3 Tournament Structure: 

  • All teams will play 3v3 matches on the Wolf Den Gym basketball courts, in a round robin tournament. Following the conclusion of the round robin, playoff games will occur.

  • Games will be played up to a score of 21, or until 10 minutes has passed, whichever comes first.

  • All Intramural Sport Guidelines and Rules for 3v3 Basketball are in effect for this tournament, please review both rulebooks prior to registering!

 

Price: Cost for this tournament is $10.00/player

 

Registration Details: Registration for our tournament will open on August 21st @ 12:01am, and close September 11th @ 11:59pm! Students will need to purchase a Campus Recreation Pass and register on the FusionPLAY app for registration to be considered complete! 

All teams must have at least three (3) members, with a maximum of five (5) people per team. As this is an open league, any combination of gender identities can make up a team! Our regular intramural policies still apply, and can be found here

One Stop First Day Festival

The One Stop First Day Festival is the official welcome to Lakehead University as students begin moving into residence.

This festival includes a number of great programs including:

Residence Move-In Day 

Get all moved into your home for the school year checking in at the front of Bartley Residence! Campus tours will be running every hour on the hour from 11:00am to 3:00pm starting at the side of the Bartley Residence. 

One Stop Shop

Swing on by the Agora and pick up everything you will need including your student card, bus pass, parking pass (if needed), load your meal plan, pick up your orientation kit, learn about your student health plan, and more!

Live, Laugh, Lake!

Ramp up the excitement around Lake Tamblyn! There will be live music by Cole Myronuk and Small Town Bad, free samples from various local vendors, reptile show, outdoor games & activities, and more!

Community Fair

Hosted in The Outpost, Lakehead University Student Union's campus bar, swing on by and meet with various local vendors and community organizations sharing information about their services!

For your parents and supporters joining you and helping you move into residence. If they have any questions for any of our staff or departments, or just want a place to hang out and refresh with a coffee, tea, or pastry, this is the place to be. Find this event in the Faculty Lounge.
