Reporting to the International Engagement Specialist on the Orillia Campus, the International Student Life Assistant will foster meaningful relationships, social engagement and create a sense of belonging on campus to support transition and retention amongst full time degree-seeking and short-term English Language international students. They will plan and facilitate on-campus events, leverage social media to communicate with students, and champion administrative duties to support day-to-day departmental functions and projects. As a first point of contact with international students, the International Student Life Assistant triages students’ needs and makes appropriate referrals.

 

With direction and support from the International Engagement Specialist, the International Student Life

Assistant will assist with orientations, workshops, cultural events and off-campus trips by completing tasks such as preparing promotional materials, completing risk management assessments, scheduling guest presenters, coordinating room bookings, catering, and hosting. They will deliver essential information and provide relevant advice on the spot with regards to programming and services via the phone, email and face-to-face with students. Exceptional customer service is required, as the Assistant will greet new students upon arrival on campus and help them to get settled and oriented into their new home. In order to best serve our students, availability for some evenings and weekends is required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful completion of post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in a related field including but not limited to Social Work, Social Service Work, Social Welfare, Student Affairs, Global Studies or related programs.
  • Experience working with students/client from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Experience organizing group activities, working with volunteers and doing event management activities.
  • Strong communication skills, organizational skills, great attention to details, and prompt and timely attendance.
  • Knowledge of post-secondary education environment and international student services, language, recruitment and/or study abroad programs;
  • Experience practicing interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and a customer-focused work ethic with the ability to be courteous, tactful, and patient in busy environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, take initiative, and resolve problems using innovative and creative solutions.
  • Self-Starter: must be motivated on own initiative to find tasks during periods of low volume;
  • Ability to multitask and maintain focus in a fast-paced, dynamic, and busy environment;
