The Academic Support Zone Coordinator is responsible for development, coordination and delivery of academic support programming and resources for Lakehead University. Overseeing the operations of the Academic Support Zone in Thunder Bay, including on-boarding, supervision and coaching of staff, the ASZ Coordinator works closely with the Academic Support Zone in Orillia as well as other partners, such as Georgian College, to support consistency of operations for all Lakehead students. The ASZ Coordinator will identify academic support needs of students in partnership with other academic and student service units, and work with partners to design, promote and deliver programming to meet these needs.

 

The ASZ Coordinator maintains a distinct focus on the development, execution, and reporting of innovative and quality academic support programs, events, and communications. These programs assist Lakehead students in achieving success across all academic disciplines - whether on campus or at a distance.

 

The role will oversee the daily operation of the Academic Support Zone, including staffing schedules, daily supervision and payroll reporting.  They will interview Writing Coaches, Tutors, Peer Mentors and ASZ volunteers, and provide Orientation and program training to all.  Additionally, they will research, develop and execute new ASZ programming, based on student and faculty feedback, industry and statistical trends, best practices and emerging topics in academic support services and programs across all academic disciplines.

 

Candidates to this position must have completed a Undergraduate Degree in English, Professional Writing, Communications, Education or an equivalent, combined with 3 years of relevant experience. Knowledge of distinct learning needs of special student populations, including English Language Learners, college transfer, mature and first generation students is an asset, along with the a thorough understanding of the University's academic integrity/academic dishonesty policy. Outstanding written and oral communication skills are imperative to success, along with effective interpersonal skills for establishing rapport with students, faculty and staff.  Familiarity with common software programs, interactive grammar and research programs, and website management is an asset. The successful candidate will have advanced skills in statistical tracking, reporting and analysis to be able to effectively gauge the usage and effectiveness of the ASZ's initiatives.
