Under direction of the Chair, the Anishinaabemowik Indigenous Languages Program (ALP) Coordinator manages and coordinates all aspects of the Anishinaabemowik Indigenous Language Program (ALP), within the Keewatinase Department of Indigenous Education (KIE) in the Faculty of Education.

This includes program oversight and design, supervision of instructors and programming staff, student support and advising, liaising with other departments and faculties within the university, and extensive community outreach, involvement, recruitment and representation of both the ALP program and the entire Faculty of Education.

 

Responsibilities Include:

 

Designs and implements proposals for custom and innovative programming, such as land-based and community-based cohorts

Coordinates ALP course offerings and program scheduling, working closely with the Chair of Keewatinase

Stays current with Indigenous teacher education research and methods across Canada and prepares recommendations to improve teacher education activities and program design

Designs and facilitates workshops on various subjects related to Indigenous education and language programs, both within ALP and to the wider university community

Prepares and delivers presentations on KIE and ALP programs and initiatives to conferences, First Nations communities and other organizations, government bodies and agencies

Performs a significant amount of community outreach and networking in order to recruit for multiple programs within the Faculty of Education.

Regularly travels to communities and organizations locally and regionally to establish relationships and build networks

 

Qualifications:

 

Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) preferred but not required

In-depth knowledge of Ontario K-12 school systems

Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous language and culture-based education and its role in Ontario

Thorough knowledge and understanding of Indigenous teachers in the Ontario education system, and the needs of Indigenous students, both K-12 and post-secondary

Strong analytical and communication skills

Able to provide, or ensure the provision of, traditional Indigenous ceremony and counsel to students and staff

Exemplary networking and relationship-building communication skills
