Environmental Lab and Aquatic Toxicology Research Centre

 

Temporary, Part Time

Competition # GEN-22-13

 

Reporting to Lab Managers of the Lakehead University Environmental Lab and Aquatic Toxicology Research Centre, the incumbent will be responsible for routine testing, record keeping and operation of equipment in both facilities.

 

Duties include:

  • Understanding and following standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Accurately preparing reagents and standards of specified pH, ionic strength and concentration
  • Routine chemical analysis of samples that includes accurate and precise preparation and analysis of samples
  • Culturing Daphnia magna and rainbow trout
  • Euthanizing fish following SOPs
  • Receiving and logging in samples
  • Recording all sample information and resulting data from analytical run
  • Ensuring that analytical run performance is within system suitability specs, performing basic maintenance and calibration on instruments
  • Diligently recognizing, recording and communicating outside quality control limits results, non-conformities and other anomalies
  • Completing infrastructure tasks such as restocking consumables and maintaining a safe, neat and organized lab, routine cleaning
  • Participating in reference tests and performance evaluation tests consistent with accreditation
  • Attendance at lab meetings
  • Able to lift approximately 50lbs pail samples.

 

Qualifications:

  • Diploma and experience in a laboratory setting, preferably one that is accredited
  • Demonstrated skills in calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance
  • Proficiency with computer programs including MS Word and Excel, and Lab instrument operational software
  • Knowledge of analytical laboratory accreditation (ISO 17025_2017) is an asset
