Reporting to the Director, English Languages Centre, the ELC Student Life Coordinator is responsible for developing and delivering engaging, experiential learning and extracurricular programming for ELC students on our campuses. Programming is intended to enhance ELC student authentic learning, foster communicative language development, and to encourage civic engagement in a diverse and global world. The incumbent manages the English Language Centre's Homestay program, coordinating placements and ensuring student and host satisfaction, oversees the ELC’s social media platforms, and assists with onboarding and orientation of new students. 

 

Under the supervision of the Director, ELC, in collaboration with all ELC staff and instructors, and the International Engagement Specialist in Orillia, and working within a pre-approved budget, the ELC Student Life Coordinator:

 

• Develops experiential learning activities on the Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses and within both communities. These activities align with the ELC overall learning outcomes and specific program learning outcomes. Programming is designed to enhance ELC student engagement, language development, and cultural knowledge and, for students enrolled in the Academic English Program, transition into Lakehead University academic programs and life in our communities. Programming leads to and promotes the development of student authentic learning.

• Assists in the design, development, and overseeing innovative experiential learning programming that promotes student well-being, transition to life in Canada, academic success in the English Language Centre and their transition into academic programs at Lakehead University.

• Plans, designs and coordinates extracurricular or recreational activities aimed at engaging ELC students outside of the classroom.

• Collaborates with the Department of International Students Services in the planning and execution of specific large events that involve ELC and the general international student population.

 

The ELC Student Life Coordinator develops, manages and maintains the ELC Homestay Program. This includes:

 

• Ensuring that the Homestay Program meets the requirements for Languages Canada accreditation.

• Maintaining the ELC Homestay Host Families database.

• Conducting information sessions targeting the University community and communities in Thunder Bay and Orillia.

• Receiving and reviewing all processes relating to student and host family applications, including conducting information sessions, reviewing police checks and arranging connections between students and host families.

• Given the nature of this position, flexibility in work hours is expected (e.g. available for irregular hours, extended workdays, and weekends). Provisions are in place to provide the incumbent with time off in lieu of extra hours worked.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Health and Safety Training, First Aid Certification, undergraduate

• Post-secondary university degree or college diploma;

• Excellent Interpersonal and networking skills; ability to build strong professional relationships within the community and interdepartmentally.

• Strong organizational and time management skills; team player; ability to multitask and prioritize workload for often high pressure, time sensitive and demanding projects;

• Strong computer skills: Word, PowerPoint. social media, basic graphic design, for example;

• Good judgement and troubleshooting skills; ability to make key decisions and judge risks in situations both on campus and in the community, including vetting homestay families, and on student events.

• Experience in experiential learning activities and social event planning, budget management and the   ability to adapt to changes and pressure in an expeditious environment.
