Reporting to the Associate Vice-Provost, Students, the Student Affairs Officer acts as ambassador for Lakehead University’s Student Affairs Division by providing meaningful student programming opportunities and a high level of service and support to students and other key stakeholders. This position plays an integral role in the delivery and coordination of programming and services for students alongside other members of the Orillia Student Affairs team members to promote student recruitment and retention. As part of this, the Officer will collaborate with the Student Affairs Leadership Team to discuss topics, issues and initiatives to meet the evolving and complex needs of our students with a focus on those areas that will support positive impacts on student recruitment and the student experience. The Officer will also provide opportunities to build a sense of community for students and support students experiencing complex issues that require service navigation through the provision of case management. 

 

The Officer will play a critical role in developing, planning and implementing initiatives and activities for students with the objective of making a positive impact on student retention and satisfaction while ensuring the plan aligns with the Student Life Cycle. In some cases, the Officer will be directly responsible for designing and implementing initiatives. In other circumstances, the Officer will support other Student Affairs staff across the campus in implementing initiatives and activities.

 

DUTIES:

  • Playing an active role in student recruitment through the coordination of campus tours
  • Involved in the planning, coordination or support of Campus Programs including, but not limited to: Fast Pass, Summer Orientation, Student Appreciation Days, Convocation and Course Registration.
    • Develops and implements effective communication plans to promote awareness and understanding of services and supports offered to students across Student Affairs
    • Chairing the Orillia Campus Student Programming Committee with the goal of leading and initiating discussions to create programming that is student-centred.
    • Ensures all events and programs follow the university’s necessary risk management processes and protocols;
    • Plays a lead role in coordinating with other units, staff and faculty members in seeking their participation and providing support prior to and during the event/initiative;
    • Supervises student employees;
    • Provides outreach, information, referrals, and support to students who are experiencing complex or multifaceted concerns that are impacting on their personal and/or academic life goals;
    • Represents Student Affairs at the local campus and keeps the Student Affairs Leadership team apprised of localized opportunities and challenges as it relates to the various Student Affairs area

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field with 3+ years of experience working in a post-secondary institution required
  • Strong computer literacy and application (knowledge of Microsoft Office, social media, Adobe Creative Suite), for daily use;
  • Experience with Ellucian’s Colleague system is considered an asset;
  • Experience in using POS systems and reviewing student financial accounts for transactions;
  • Experience using Student Recruitment’s CRM is considered an asset;
  • Excellent ability to focus in order to ensure the utmost accuracy and attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and critical thought;
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and understand FIPPA requirements;
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, customer care, and group dynamic skills;
