The position of Director, Career Services & Co-op is responsible for the direction, strategic planning, and operations for Career Services and Co-op at Lakehead University. This is achieved through the development and implementation of programming aimed at assisting in the successful employment of students and alumni, the creation and execution of a robust and targeted Employer Relations Strategy, continuous annual growth in the number of employers we work with, collaboration with Academic Units in developing/introducing/monitoring co-op programs, actively pursuing job opportunities and further expansion of supports with job placement for co-op, and exploring opportunities for students to build their skills to be successful in their future career. The Director will play a key role in working collaboratively with university partners to develop targeted programming in efforts to remove barriers to employment for

students who identify with one or more equity-seeking groups, including women, 2SLGBTQ  students, students with disabilities, racialized students and Indigenous students.

 

The Director will perform a variety of tasks, including, but not limited to:

  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive set of career and employer services that serve and support an increasingly diverse student body
  • Formulate strategies and developmental plans for Career Services & Co-op that are designed to meet the University’s strategic mission, goals and objectives outlined in the Strategic and Academic Plans, including assisting in increasing institutional retention rates, improving student satisfaction and engagement and impacting graduate employment rates
  • Develop outcome measurements as they relate to all programming and services and support evaluation and quality service provision
  • Responsible for the overall human resources, quality and operations of Career and Co-op Services across campuses
  • Ensure programming and supports address student needs in relation to the student life cycle
  • Responsible for hiring and evaluation of full and part time staff, ensure that all staff possess the skills and abilities necessary for the successful operations
  • Supervise and provide leadership and training to staff, develop and establish standards of practice, policies and procedures

 

The Director will encompass the following skills and competencies:

  • 5 to 7 years progressively responsible experience and demonstrated accomplishment in a complex University student services or employer relations focused role, including responsibility for team leadership, change management, program development, community partnerships and talent management.
  • Strong understanding of employer relations, employment readiness, career development and Co-op best practices
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and ability to engage diverse groups to support relevant programs and services
  • Solid financial management skills that include developing and monitoring budgets, conducting financial analysis and reporting financial matters
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Supervisory experience is considered an asset
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to interact successfully with multiple constituencies and stakeholders
