Reporting to the Director of the Centre for Environmental Stewardship, the incumbent will be responsible for the operations of ICP-OES, MeHg, TOC/TN, continuous flow analysis, and portable XRF in the Lakehead University Environmental Laboratory (LUEL) and Lakehead University Instrumentation Laboratory (LUIL). This position will carry out Organic, Environmental, Geochemical testing and analysis.

 

Duties include:

•Method development, performing laboratory techniques according to published procedures and releasing results to faculty, students and external clients and partners, disposal of samples and filing of lab results / data.

• Preparation of samples for analysis following standard operating procedures and established methods

• Ensure proper maintenance and usage of analytical equipment

• Implementing a quality system in daily operations

• Provide training within the laboratory to graduate and undergraduate students, and technical support / advice within or outside the laboratory.

•Perform work in laboratory facility environments and willing to work with hazardous materials, following all safety requirements and processes.

•Assist in training new students (staff, graduate, undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows) ensuring compliance with quality assurance processes and safety (chemical, biohazard) associated with Laboratory instruments.

•Review scientific literature and to conduct literature reviews on analytical methods. Design and apply new methods for a range of scientific research and contribute to the development of laboratory standard operating procedures.

•Organize, check and analyze complex data files and backups, and complete statistical analysis of the data when required.

• Purchasing and invoicing as required

Qualifications:

•Diploma and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a laboratory setting, preferably one that is accredited.

•Demonstrated skills in instrument/equipment calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or repairs is essential.

•Preferences will be given to individuals with experiences working with ICPs, MeHg, TOC/TNs, continuous flow analysis, portable XRF.

•Proficiency with computer programs including MS Office, Excel, Access, Lab instrument operational software is required.

• Knowledge of analytical laboratory accreditation (ISO 17025) would be definite assets.
