The Faculty of Natural Resources Management (Thunder Bay Campus) invites applications for the position of Silviculture Technologist and Greenhouse Manager.  This full-time position has an anticipated start date of January 5, 2022 (end date: May 27, 2022) and includes working some weekends and evenings as required.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management and operation of a research and teaching facility consisting of five modern greenhouses, several growth chambers and a computerized environment simulation laboratory.  In addition, the position will include support to three undergraduate courses: plant identification, silviculture and taxonomy. 

 

Duties will include:

- Provide knowledge and experience in cultivation and propagation of a wide variety of plant materials, and a working knowledge of identification and integrated pest management;

- Undergraduate course support includes Ontario plant identification and silviculture and may include substantial field experience with Faculty woodlots and regional field schools;

- Assist in the development and teaching of laboratories, including collection of fresh specimens, supervision of student teaching assistant instructors, grading student papers and electronic submission of marks;

- Organization of field school for second year students.

 

Desired Qualifications:

- MSc Master’s Degree in Forestry, Horticulture or Biology;

- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training;

- Ontario Driver’s License;

- St. John Ambulance – Emergency First Aid;

- Competency with office software, statistical packages and good writing skills;

- Knowledge and working experience in Argus Environmental control system;

- Knowledge and experience in teaching silviculture practicums, plant identification, and growing tree seedlings, including storage and seed stratification;

- Knowledge of the mechanics of a modern greenhouse facility;

- An understanding of environmental and resource influences on plant growth and physiology.
