Lakehead University Library (Thunder Bay Campus) invites applications for a Manager, Access Services. Reporting directly to the Head, Access Services and Outreach, this position plays a key role in a variety of tasks, including training and supervising unionized Access Services staff in the areas of lending and borrowing, course reserves, document delivery, photo ID processing and customer service.

The total library collection includes over 700,000 print volumes, access to more than 60,000 online journals and over 120,000 e-books, and rare and special collections such as the Regional Collection and the Archives. The Chancellor Paterson Library is the main library on the Thunder Bay campus and occupies its own building in the centre of campus. There are four additional libraries: one at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, the Learning Commons in Simcoe Hall (Orillia), and the Education Library (one location at the Faculty of Education-Thunder Bay and one at Heritage Place-Orillia).  Lakehead University Library is an active member of both provincial and national consortia. We provide many services in collaboration with our Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) partners, such as, Ask a Librarian (Chat Reference Service), Scholars Portal, RACER (Document Delivery) and Dataverse. The library is also part of Collaborative Futures, a project that recently launched a shared next-generation library system at 16 OCUL libraries. Our involvement with the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) as well as other consortia, allows us to provide significant digital content. Our staff complement of over 30 includes 12 librarians and an archivist.

About the Opportunity

The Manager, Access Services provides administrative and supervisory support to the Chancellor Paterson Library Access Services department. This position plays a key role in a variety of tasks including:

• Guiding and managing the work of full-time Library Assistants and Technicians in the

  Access Services department; this work includes lending and borrowing, customer

  service, document delivery, and photo ID;

• Monitors Access Services operations, provides support and guidance to staff, ensuring

  high-quality customer service; identifies problems, initiates, and implements changes

  in consultation with Head, Access Services and Outreach.

• Collects and analyzes usage data to identify trends, assess current services and

  make recommendations for future improvements.

• Works collaboratively with the evening supervisor to ensure the library is opened and

  closed according to an established schedule.

• Coordinates the sharing of materials between the Lakehead University Library

  branches. This includes working with the mailing and shipping departments to ensure

  that items arrive at their intended destination in a timely manner.

• Supports the development and maintenance of accessibility services at Chancellor

  Paterson Library.

• Coordinates Accessible Content E-Portal service for all campus Libraries. This

  service provides accessible format copies of any materials in the Library's book collection.

• Hours for this position include two evening shifts per week

Required Qualifications

•A library technician diploma, or related degree combined with three years of

 library experience

•At least two years of experience leading or managing a team; preferably in a

 unionized library environment

•Strong organizational and time management skills

•Experience working with integrated library systems

•Excellent interpersonal skills

•Strong customer service skills

•Knowledge of library resources and basic reference skills

•Strong computer skills and familiarity with Google Workspace
