You are a creative, organized and self-motivated individual who is excited to recruit and support Indigenous students' entry into the Indigenous STEM Access Program (STEM) and Asin Certificate in Geological Studies (Asin) and ensure successful transition to an undergraduate program at Lakehead University and to establish collaborative relationships with specific University departments, First Nation communities, Indigenous organizations, high schools locally, regionally and provincially, First Nation Funders, and Industry Partners.
The overall purpose of this role is the coordination of the STEM and Asin program in planning, delivery & evaluation, as well as to facilitate the development of policies, guidelines, criteria around selection, attendance, probation, leaves of absence, etc. The incumbent will collect data, document program strengths and weaknesses and implement changes to improve program delivery. The ISTEM Coordinator will support Indigenous STEM Access Students through out the academic year, track students’ progress and success, including conducting exit interviews, when possible, and identify staff training and professional development needs as it pertains to working with Indigenous students. The incumbent will collaborate and partner with various departments to ensure support systems are in place for STEM and Asin students and develop internal and external details pertaining to STEM and Asin.
The successful candidate has:
-A Master’s degree in a related field and Undergraduate degree in related field (Bachelor of Education degree would be an asset)
-At least two years of related experience in Indigenous education
-A thorough understanding of the public education system from high school to post-secondary including adult education.
-An understanding of Indigenous STEM would be an asset
-Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication
-understanding of public education system, able to work in a team and independently with little supervision
-excellent time management
-research skills to keep up to date on current issues in Indigenous education, retention & recruitment.
-experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail applications
-Valid driver's license and good driving record
-comfortability with public speaking & community engagement
-willingness to travel
