POST DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP: CULTURALLY SAFE HEALTH CARE

       

 

This postdoctoral fellowship is offered within a research project that seeks to implement strategies to improve the provision of culturally safe health care for Indigenous peoples in Thunder Bay ON, London, ON and the surrounding regions. Through this project, the successful candidate will engage with multiple-stakeholders to identify, design and implement culturally safe policies, practices and training through collaborative action-based and Indigenous methodologies.

 

The post-doctoral fellowship will be supervised by Dr. Lana Ray. Dr. Ray, an Anishinaabe scholar located in the Department of Indigenous Learning at Lakehead University, is the co-Principal Investigator on the project and the Lead for the Thunder Bay site. The Project is funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR).

 

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach online and/or in-person in the Indigenous Learning Department at Lakehead University including the opportunity to design their own course. Remuneration for this opportunity is in addition to the post-doctoral fellowship salary.

 

Salary: $CAN 35,000/year + benefits

 

Term: 1-year with the possibility of extension for one more year

 

Expected Hours: 35 hours/week

 

Start Date: Ideally the successful candidate would start September 1, 2021

Location: It is preferred that the successful candidate be located in Thunder Bay, however there is the possibility to work remotely off-campus.

 

Duties

 

The post-doctoral researcher will:

 

• review literature and policy documents that pertain to cultural safety and

   Indigenous peoples’ health care experience

• assist Dr. Ray in research planning activities

• conduct interviews with health service providers in Thunder Bay and the surrounding region

• coordinate and support a provincial multi-stakeholder health policy table

• use NVivo to analyze qualitative data

• contribute to writing peer-reviewed manuscripts and community knowledge

  translation activities

• develop grant applications to support future research studies

 

Required Qualifications

 

• Ph.D. in a relevant discipline completed by September 2021 and conferred within the last

  6 years 

• Prior experience working with Indigenous communities and in the health care sector

  would be considered an asset.
