Lakehead University, Orillia Campus, invites applications for a Contract Lecturer in the School of Social Work.  Applications are requested to teach:

SOWK 2011 FAO – Foundations of Social Work Practice (Fall) (a mix of in-person and remote delivery may be required)
An introduction to the foundational theoretical and practice dimensions that contribute to and define the profession of social work. The social contexts and challenges of individuals, groups, and communities will be considered by reference to several of the diverse populations served by social work. An introduction will be provided to the broad range of service approaches that support a generalist social work practice in Canadian society.

                                     Mondays, 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.

SOWK 3215 FAO – Social Work Interview & Communication Skills I (Fall) (a mix of in-person and remote delivery may be required)
 Provides students with the opportunity to understand and learn preparatory skills of communication and interviewing as part of their emerging social work practice. One's values, attitudes and beliefs as well as an understanding, appreciation and respect for cultural diversity will be emphasized. From an ecological and experiential approach, students will be introduced to exercises on verbal/non-verbal communications, professional relationships, mutuality and social work ethics.

SOWK 3415 FDE – Treatment of Drug and Alcohol Abuse (Fall) (web based)
An interdisciplinary examination of the assessment and treatment of addictions. A biopsychosocial perspective is used to study current theory and practice. The course content is relevant to studies in the human services, education and health care fields.

SOWK 4407 FAO – Social Work Interview & Communication Skills I & II (Fall) (a mix of in-person and remote delivery may be required)
Provides students with the opportunity to understand and learn foundational skills of communication and clinical interviewing as part of their emerging social work practice. In addition, students will learn about the professional and ethical use of self in their social work practice. One's values, attitudes and beliefs as well as an understanding, appreciation and respect for cultural diversity will be emphasized. Students will be introduced to the fundamental components of an intake/assessment interview and write-up, treatment planning, the process of change, and termination. Particular attention is devoted to the importance of the therapeutic alliance, relationship, and communication/ listening skills. Also, selected major theoretical models and evidence based theoretical concepts that enhance clinical social work practice/interviewing will be addressed. The course will also introduce students to the major mental health/clinical issues clients typically present and will discuss their impact on clinical interviewing.

SOWK 4610 FDE – Social Work Practice with Diverse Populations (Fall) (web based)
This course seeks to develop a culturally sensitive approach to practice by: enhancing self-awareness, helping students learn effective intervention skills, and promoting awareness and sensitivity regarding issues faced by diverse populations within our society. It is relevant to the studies in the human service, education and health care fields.

SOWK 2012 WAO – Human Development (Winter) (a mix of in-person and remote delivery may be required)
An introduction to theories and concepts that have been developed to explain human development from birth through to old age. An exploration of the physical, cognitive, socio-emotional and relational aspects of development over the lifespan. The major emphasis of the course is on the implications of developmental issues for social work practice.

SOWK 3315 WAO – Social Work Interview & Communications Skills II (Winter) (a mix of in-person and remote delivery may be required)
Provides students with the opportunity to understand and learn foundational skills of communication and interviewing as part of their emerging social work practice. In addition, students will learn about the professional and ethical use of self in their social work practice. One's values, attitudes and beliefs as well as an understanding, appreciation and respect for cultural diversity will be emphasized. Particular attention is devoted to the application of relationship and communication theories and how critical these theories are to social work practice.

SOWK 3413 WDE – Child Welfare (Winter) (web based)
An examination of abuse, violence, and dysfunction within families. The emphasis will be on intervention strategies, services, prevention, and education. The role of human service systems, helping professionals and community response to the variety of issues related to public child welfare and family welfare in contemporary society and northern communities will be examined.

SOWK 3439 WDE – Living with Grief and Loss (Winter) (web based)
A study of the human grief process, whether it is due to bereavement or other significant life losses, and effective ways to support people in adapting to their new reality. Both normal and complicated grief will be considered. The course is relevant to studies in the human services, gerontology, education and health care.

SOWK 4770 WDE/WDF – Psychosocial Palliative Care (Winter) (web based)
An examination of the social, psychological and spiritual issues faced by people who are dying, and the knowledge, values and skills needed to effectively support them, their families and friends. Emphasis is placed on the importance of a team approach in providing holistic palliative care. The course content is relevant to studies in the human services, education and health care fields.

Start Date/Duration:          January 10, 2022 – April 30, 2022

Qualifications Preferred:  PhD in Social Work or RSW, MSW with 10 years experience in related field

 Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
