Lakehead University, Orillia Campus, invites applications for a Contract Lecturer in the Department of Geography & the Environment. Applications are requested to teach:

Geography 1150 FDF – The Environment - ZOOM
An introduction to current environmental issues using an approach which stresses the interrelationships between environments and societies. The major environmental and societal components of the earth/atmosphere system will be examined to provide a base for the consideration of the nature and development of modern environmental problems. Potential solutions to the problems will be evaluated through consideration of such elements as technology, politics, economics, and planning.

Geography 1190 WAO – Indigenous Knowledge, Science and the Environment
Current environment and sustainability issues will be examined using a geographical approach that incorporates Indigenous knowledge, worldviews and practices. By comparing traditional ecological knowledge with western scientific approaches, students will gain an enhanced understanding of ecosystems and society’s place within it. The course engages students in case studies that exemplify the role of Indigenous Peoples in ecosystem management in Canada, in particular. The role of treaties and aboriginal rights in federal and provincial environment and resource management, the impact of environmental law decisions on Indigenous Peoples, and the adversarial and collaborative roles that Indigenous Peoples play to respond to current environmental changes and challenges will be the focus of key topics.

Geography 2251  WAO - Geographical Inquiry & Interpretation
Approaches to the collection, analysis, display, and interpretation of information pertaining to geographical landscapes. Introduction to philosophical and methodological traditions of geographical inquiry.

Geography 3631 WAO – Geography of Canada
Regional geography of Canada with an emphasis on physical setting of regions, spatial patterns of economic activities and urbanization, core-periphery relationships between and within regions, and national and regional impacts of global economic restructuring.

Geography 3811 FAO – Political Geography
A geographical approach to political patterns on a world, regional and local scale. The concepts of the territorial state, nation and nationalism, and geopolitical power. Electoral geography and patterns in local politics.

Geography 4911 FBO – Recreation & Tourism
An introduction to the fields of recreation and tourism as elements of geographic study. Examination of how the spatial distribution of these activities is related to economic, cultural and environmental conditions. The interrelationship between recreation and tourist activities will be examined via discussion of types of activity and planning for the future. The effects of COVID19 will be discussed.

Qualifications Preferred:  PhD in Geography or related field with significant expertise related to the topic they will be teaching. The minimum requirement is a Master’s degree. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.
