TECHNICIAN B INSTRUMENTATION LABORATORY 

 
Reporting to the Director of Analytical Testing Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the operations of ICP-MS, ICP-AES, HPLC/UPLC-MS, GC-MS and Microscopes in the Lakehead University Instrumentation Laboratory (LUIL). This position will carry out Organic, Environmental, Geochemical testing and analysis.
 
Duties include:        
  • Method development, performing laboratory techniques according to published procedures and releasing results to faculty, students and external clients, disposal of samples and filing of lab results / data.  
  • Provide training within the laboratory to graduate and undergraduate students, and technical support / advice within or outside the laboratory.  
  • Perform work in laboratory facility environments and willing to work with hazardous materials, following all safety requirements and processes.  
  • Assist in training new students (staff, graduate, undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows) ensuring compliance with quality assurance processes and safety (chemical, biohazard) associated with Laboratory instruments.  
  • Review scientific literature and to conduct literature reviews on analytical methods. Design and apply new methods for a range of scientific research, and contribute to the development of laboratory standard operating procedures.  
  • Organize, check and analyze complex data files and backups, and complete statistical analysis of the data.  
  • Support a workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements.  
Qualifications:
  • MSc degree in Chemistry, Biology or Geo/chemistry or Biochemistry and a minimum of 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated skills in instrument/equipment calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or repairs is essential.
  • Preferences will be given to individuals with experiences working with ICPs, Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry and Microscopy.
  • Proficiency with computer programs including MS Office, Excel, Access, Lab instrument operational software is required.
  • Knowledge of analytical laboratory accreditation (ISO 17025) would be definite assets.
