Web Development Manager
Overview
Reporting to the Director, Marketing, Brand & Digital Strategy, the Web Development Manager leads the planning and delivery of Lakehead’s web ecosystem, including lakeheadu.ca, myInfo, ecommerce platforms, and a range of custom applications. This role oversees a small team, partners with stakeholders across campus, and ensures our digital platforms are reliable, secure, accessible, and user-focused.
Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of web, ecommerce, and application projects from intake through launch (scope, timelines, resourcing, risk, and budget).
- Provide people leadership, coaching, and day-to-day direction to a team of developers/designers (including hiring and performance support as needed).
- Provide technical leadership to ensure scalable architecture, strong development practices, and clean, maintainable code.
- Ensure platform performance and uptime through monitoring, maintenance planning, and incident response.
- Champion accessibility compliance (AODA/WCAG) through standards, audits, remediation, and team training.
- Ensure strong security practices and support compliance requirements for payment-enabled services (PCI DSS).
- Manage external vendors/partners where required (contracts, deliverables, timelines, and quality).
- Identify opportunities to improve platforms, tooling, processes, and user experience through innovation and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Diploma/degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Web Development, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of management/leadership experience.
- 3+ years of experience in a post-secondary environment (or comparable complex organization).
- Strong knowledge of modern web development practices and platforms, including CMS environments (e.g., WordPress, Drupal).
- Experience with cloud and web infrastructure (e.g., AWS), security best practices, and databases.
- Demonstrated experience leading accessibility work (AODA/WCAG) and delivering compliant, user-friendly digital experiences.
- Strong communication, planning, and stakeholder management skills.
