Overview


The Student Affairs Communication Specialist plays an important role within the Student Affairs team at Lakehead University. They are responsible for working across Student Affairs departments to coordinate a strategic and consistent approach to communications through the development, implementation and evaluation of a communication plan that is guided by the student lifecyle and supports our diverse student population.  Their work includes print, digital and social strategies aimed at increasing student awareness and utilization of supports and services, ultimately contributing to student persistence and success. 

Responsibilities


  • Write, edit, and manage online, digital, and social media content for Student Affairs departments, ensuring content is student-focused.
  • Launch and maintain a strong social media presence across relevant platforms, including promoting events, engaging with student posts, and creating meaningful content related to the student life cycle and skill development.
  • Develop and execute ad campaigns, monitor their effectiveness, provide reports with recommendations, and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Oversee the creation and execution of print and digital campaigns, including email campaigns, newsletters, posters, signage, and brochures, to support retention initiatives such as Student Affairs branding, Financial Literacy programming, Convocation, Grad Fair, and Health Promotion.
  • Conduct research, interviews, and write engaging, audience-appropriate copy for promotional materials.
  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of an annual strategic communication plan for Student Affairs, ensuring alignment with the university’s Strategic and Academic Plan and departmental goals.
  • Support a cohesive, student-centered web presence for Student Affairs by maintaining and updating website content and collaborating with other departments for consistency.
  • Monitor social media trends and best practices in post-secondary education to enhance engagement and effectiveness.

Qualifications


  • 3-5 years of experience working in a post-secondary setting in the field of student recruitment, retention and marketing
  • Undergraduate University degree required
  • Documented successful outcomes managing professional social media accounts and campaigns
  • Displays in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.) and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios. Also has working knowledge of social media tools (i.e., Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, etc.) and monitoring and reporting services
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills, along with the general ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form. Ability to adapt communication tones and voices for different audiences and mediums
  • Strong understanding of the lifecycle of a current student and recruitment and admissions enrolment funnel
