Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering at Lakehead University offers professional engineering education that’s designed to be open and accessible to everyone.

We are proud of our commitment to expanding opportunities and building more pathways for people from a variety of academic backgrounds to study engineering.

With around 800 undergraduates and 300 graduate students, we provide a learning environment where students can achieve their ambitions and earn the credentials they need surrounded by a strong and supportive community.

All our programs are offered at our campus in Thunder Bay in Northwestern Ontario, and we now offer selected programs at Lakehead University’s STEM Hub in Barrie, Central Ontario.

Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Programs

Post-Diploma Transfer Pathway

Provides graduates of eligible engineering technology diploma programs from across Canada with the opportunity to complete a post-diploma Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in just two years.

Common Year in Applied Science

Delivered online, with students who complete this one-year pathway able to enter an in-person Bachelor of Engineering program in Thunder Bay or Barrie.

Additional Options

Engineering Co-op

Available with all our Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees, including for students starting in first year and transfer students.

To graduate from a BEng with Co-op program, students complete 16 months of co-op, that is typically undertaken between Year 3 and Year 4.

Joint BEng + MBA

Provides students with the opportunity study for a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) alongside their Bachelor of Engineering (BEng).

Students who choose this option can graduate with a BEng and an MBA in just five years, or if they are a transfer student this can be completed in three years.

Research

Each of the five Academic Departments that make up the Faculty of Engineering has faculty members engaged in a range of research areas and specializations:

Members of the Faculty of Engineering are affiliated with a number of research centres, institutes and laboratories at Lakehead University that undertake interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research in partnership with industry, community organizations and government – including the Green Processes Research Centre, the Biorefining Research Institute, and the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration.

Initiatives

FUTURE BUILDERS: Indigenous Engineering Pathways

An Indigenous-led initiative that supports Indigenous youth as they explore futures in engineering, science, and technology - all grounded in culture, community, and Indigenous ways of knowing. This initiative is intended to advance Indigenous youth participation in engineering and STEM by co-creating culturally grounded, community-driven learning pathways that blend traditional knowledge with modern innovation.

Build the future

Creating Engineering Pathways for Military-Connected Learners

The Faculty of Engineering is currently developing a new initiative Creating Engineering Pathways for Military-Connected Learners in partnership with Georgian College. By recognizing the skills and experiences from the Canadian Armed Forces, the project is designed to expand access to programs that support in-demand labour market sectors.

Community

Students in the Faculty of Engineering have the opportunity to take part in a variety of clubs, societies and extracurricular activities, including a vibrant collection of groups created and led by Lakehead's engineering students.

Our teams of engineering students take part in many different competitions across North America - such as the ASCE Student Steel Bridge Competition, the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race, the Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition, Formula SAE (FSAE) Canada, and the SAE Aero Design Competition.
