Creating Engineering Pathways
for Military-Connected Learners

Military-Connected Learners

The Faculty of Engineering is committed to creating accessible pathways into engineering education for current and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

Military personnel develop valuable technical knowledge, practical skills, leadership experience, and problem-solving abilities through their training and service. Many of these competencies align closely with the skills and attributes required for success in engineering studies and professional engineering practice.

Through a project supported by the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT), the Faculty of Engineering explored opportunities to improve access to engineering education for military-connected learners. This work included research into the experiences of military learners, a review of leading practices in Canada and internationally, and an assessment of how military training and experience may support entry into engineering programs.

Pathways into Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering offers several pathways into accredited Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programs. Depending on an applicant's educational background, previous postsecondary studies, military training, and professional experience, there may be different options available to support entry into engineering education.

We are continuing to develop and refine processes that recognize the diverse experiences of military learners and provide clear guidance on pathway options, admissions requirements, and available supports.

Flexible Learning Opportunities

We recognize that many military personnel and veterans balance education with employment, family responsibilities, and other commitments. Flexible learning opportunities, including online and pathway-based programs, may provide an accessible route into engineering studies while helping students prepare for the academic demands of a professional engineering degree.

Dedicated Support

The Faculty of Engineering is committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for military learners. In addition to the academic supports available to all students, we are exploring opportunities to strengthen services, resources, and connections that support military personnel, veterans, and their families throughout their educational journey.
