Options

Alongside our Bachelor of Engineering degrees, we offer our students the option to expand their skills and build their experience with Engineering Co-op, and our unique joint Bachelor of Engineering + Master of Business Administration delivered in partnership with the Faculty of Business.

Engineering Co-op

Engineering Co-op is available with all our Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees offered at the Thunder Bay campus and the Barrie STEM Hub, including students starting in first year and diploma-to-degree transfer students.

To graduate from a BEng with Co-op degree program, students need to complete 16 months of co-op, that is typically undertaken between Year 3 and Year 4. It is also an option between Year 2 and Year 3. This is optional for all Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programs, with the exception of Mechatronics Engineering where students must complete at least one four-month work placement to graduate from the program. Students in a Bachelor of Engineering program must have a 70 per cent cumulative average or higher in engineering courses to be eligible to undertake co-op.

Taking a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) with Co-op degree provides students with the opportunity to undertake full-time paid placements at variety of employers including major corporations, technology startups, non-profits and government.

Lakehead also offers Entrepreneurial Co-op (E-Co-op), where students – rather than applying to work for an employer - receive support to develop and launch their own business. Students work closely with Ingenuity office and have access to mentors, entrepreneurs and professional supports. Students can also receive a monetary $5,000 award to support the conception of the business during the Entrepreneurial Co-op term.

Engineering Co-op is to provide students with a planned, supervised work-integrated learning experiences that will enhance both their academic learning and their employment marketability upon graduation from their BEng. Students undertaking co-op will gain valuable practical experience, build their workplace skills, establish professional relationships to expand their network – and have the chance to earn while they learn.

For Bachelor of Engineering students, there is also the chance to gain professional experience that can potentially count towards up to 12 months of the required 48 months of work experience required to apply for professional engineering licensure.

Lakehead University’s Career Services and Co-op team offers support to students to identify and apply for co-op placements, including the MySuccess job bank, connecting students with potential co-op employers, resume and cover letter guidance, and interview preparation. There are also engineering-focused career fairs and employer recruitment sessions organized throughout the academic year.

Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) with Masters of Business Administration (MBA)

Our joint BEng + MBA dual degree program provides students with the opportunity study for a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) alongside their Bachelor of Engineering (BEng).

This option is available with all Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees offered at the Thunder Bay campus. This option is not currently available for students at the Barrie STEM Hub.

MBA students in a classroomStudents taking the dual degree option can begin their MBA studies in the fourth year of their Bachelor of Engineering program, and typically take an additional academic year to complete their MBA courses and graduate with a joint BEng + MBA.

Students who choose this option can graduate with a BEng and an MBA in just five years, or if they are a diploma-to-degree transfer student this dual degree can be completed in three years.

Students can apply directly to the dual BEng + MBA program directly through OUAC or they can choose to add this option once they are a student at Lakehead. To enter the MBA program, dual degree BEng + MBA students must maintain a GPA of 70 per cent.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)

A GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) exam is not necessary at the time of application. Students that obtain grades that are above average in their BEng program may be eligible for a waiver. If no waiver is provided, a GMAT (min score 500) must be completed before you can take any MBA courses. The Business Skills Development Program (BSDP) is an alternative to the GMAT that can be taken in the summer between Years 3 and 4 of the BEng.
