Lakehead University Engineering Student Society (ESS)

Moose ESS logo

The Lakehead University Engineering Student Society (ESS) is the official representative for all engineering undergraduate students at Lakehead University and exists to support students academically, socially, and professionally. Over the course of the school year, the ESS hosts speaker series, professional development workshops, conferences, sporting events, social events, and engineering competitions.

Activities organized by ESS include Orientation, Frosh, Back to the Bay, Industry Night, the charity Bus Pull, the annual stress-relief Car Smash, and the Lakehead Engineering Competition, as well as a series of events to mark National Engineering Month every year. As a member of ESSCO (Engineering Student Societies' Council of Ontario) and CFES (Canadian Federation of Engineering Students), representatives of the ESS of Lakehead University attend many conferences across North America throughout the year.

Student Technical Chapters

We have active student chapters and branches of various engineering organizations across different disciplines, including:

Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChe)Lakehead University Student Chapter

The Lakehead Chemical Engineering Society is part of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE), a national professional association that unites chemical engineering students and professionals working in industry, academia, or government. Their mission is to advance the chemical engineering profession and the careers of its practitioners by facilitating the exchange of knowledge, enabling lifelong learning, promoting STEM education, and advocating ethical and responsible practices.

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering – Lakehead University Student Chapter

The Lakehead Student Chapter of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) bridges the gap between students and professionals within civil engineering. The chapter focuses on civil engineering related topics that extend the scope of what is learned inside the classroom. This includes industry professional presentations, civil engineering student undergraduate and graduate level research opportunities, and more.

Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering – Lakehead University Student Chapter

The Lakehead University CSME Student Chapter is the student embodiment of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. The Student Chapter was established over two decades ago when pioneering students sought to establish a campus society dedicated to advance and stimulate the minds of their fellow mechanical engineering peers. From its inception, the chapter has grown to be a society known for promoting student engagement and enhancing engineering student life at Lakehead University, including networking events and opportunities for scholarships, conferences, and more.

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) - Lakehead University Student Chapter

The IEEE Student Branch at Lakehead University connects engineering students with peers, faculty, and industry professionals. The chapter supports professional development, networking, and industry insight for electrical and electronics engineering students, as well as coding tutorials, movie nights, and more.

Wolf Labs Engineering Makerspace

The Wolf Labs Engineering Makerspace is available to all engineering students, with equipment including with laser cutters and 3D printers which are all free to use.

Competition Teams

Lakehead's Faculty of Engineering is well-known for our student teams that take part in competitions with Canadian and American universities across a whole range of activities:

Lakehead University Formula SAE Team (LUFASE)

LUFSAE is comprised of ambitious and driven engineering students from Lakehead University who share a common goal: to design, build, and race high-performance formula-style race cars. The team embodies the spirit of collaboration, determination, and ingenuity to tackle the challenges of conceptualizing, fabricating, and testing vehicles.
