This mathematics concepts course is focused on the specialized concepts of mathematics as needed by teachers who are either concerned about their mathematical competency and/or wish to strengthen their conceptual understanding of elementary mathematics.

This course is taught following the principles of reform mathematics, consistent with the 2005 revised Ontario curriculum emphasis on teaching for understanding rather than on rote application of rules. It will provide opportunities to deepen mathematical understanding of elementary mathematics through hands-on activities, discussion, problem solving and modeling.

Term I focuses on the content areas of whole numbers and operations, fractions and operations, and decimals and percents.

This course provides Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board teachers with the knowledge and skills to create a dynamic community of mathematicians in your classroom. safeTALK is a program developed by LivingWorks to train and certify suicide alert helpers. As a pre-service teacher,  this course will provide you with a much-needed skill set for handling crisis as well as suicide intervention with students. This course addresses the following information:

• Learn to recognize opportunities to help a person with thoughts of suicide
• Develop skills to provide intervention and connect with community resources, which can offer more specialized help
• Learn and practice skills (similar to First Aid/CPR courses) to confidently and competently respond to those at risk of suicide

The benefits of this non-credit workshop are substantial and long lasting. There are employment opportunities in Canada and abroad. It is a great addition to your resume as employers look for candidates who bring with them a diverse skill set and a passion for meeting the needs of their students.

This course places emphasis on teaching for understanding rather than on rote application of rules. It will provide opportunities to increase your understanding of math concepts through hands-on activities, discussion, and problem solving. Basic mathematical concepts at grade levels four (4) through seven (7) will be addressed; however, you will not be taught algorithms in order to memorize and apply them.

This non-credit workshop provides you with the opportunity to improve your grammar skills in order to provide clear and practical advice to student writers.

This workshop concentrates on classroom-tested, sound pedagogical strategies that assist you and your students to understand the writing process and the pivotal role that grammar plays in this process. This course also addresses the assessment of student writing as evidenced by appropriate examples and the most common student errors.

Communication is a 21st century learning skill and good communication between teachers and parents does not just happen; it requires planning and skill.

This non-credit workshop will explore the ways in which teachers communicate both intentionally and unintentionally with students, colleagues, school administration, the community, and parents.

During this workshop, you will learn how to:

• Project a positive image
• Create conditions for learning that invite student voice
• Deliver descriptive feedback to help students move forward
• Engage parents so that they help "co-produce learning with the school and the community
