This practical workshop helps teacher candidates to improve their classroom teaching performance. The instructor uses a systematic approach to critically reflect on and inquire into the various components of the practicum. This non-credit workshop addresses the following aspects of a practicum:

  • Planning, assessment, and evaluation
  • Classroom management
  • Differentiated instruction
  • Establishing a positive classroom environment

The experienced instructor will work both one-on-one and in a group setting to help participants to learn how to self-assess and identify their areas of growth. This workshop provides extra support for teacher candidates before their next practicum.

Math Skills Development (P/J) - YAO - Orillia

This non-credit workshop is for Primary/Junior Division Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) students who are either concerned about their mathematical competency and/or wish to strengthen their mathematical understanding.

This twenty (20) hour workshop follows the principles of reform math, consistent with the 2005 revised Ontario curriculum. This course places emphasis on teaching for understanding rather than on rote application of rules. It will provide opportunities to increase your understanding of math concepts through hands-on activities, discussion, and problem solving. Basic mathematical concepts at grade levels four (4) through seven (7) will be addressed; however, you will not be taught algorithms in order to memorize and apply them.

Lesbain, Gay, Bi, Trans (LGBT) Youth in the Classroom

This workshop explores the difficulties faced by LGBT+ youth in the classroom relating to heteronormativity and homophobia. Through defining the identities of LGBT youth, as well as a positive and negative space, participants will learn how to create safe, caring environments for students, regardless of their identities. Case studies will be used to illustrate the common problems faced by LGBT youth in classrooms, as well as how these problems effect everyone in the classroom, school, and community.

By the end of this workshop, candidates should:

  • Understand how typical classroom settings can be detrimental for the well-being of LGBT youth;
  • Conceptualize the sexuality and gender-identity spectrum, and recognize the plethora of terms which youth may use to identify themselves;
  • Be aware of language which may arise in the classroom, some of which may be derogatory;
  • Understand how to make their classrooms and schools more LGBT friendly; and,
  • Have the skills to deal with bullying, and other issues that LGBT students might experience in the classroom.

Smartboard in the Classroom Part 1

Learn to use Smartboard in the classroom.

This non-credit workshop focuses on the technical side of using a Smartboard. Demonstrations include the board’s capabilities and functions, as well some basic troubleshooting. This workshop demonstrates the SMART notebook software as well as the board's integration into other software such as the Microsoft Office Suite. Participants will have an opportunity for some hands on training and a chance to use the board. 

The focus of the training will be more technical then pedagogical, aiming to give the participants a good understanding of how to use the board.

Math for Teaching (J/I) Part 2

The Department of Professional Development is pleased to offer this non-credit course to students at the Faculty of Education. This mathematics concepts course is focused on the specialized concepts of mathematics as needed by teachers who are either concerned about their mathematical competency and/or wish to strengthen their conceptual understanding of elementary mathematics.

This course is taught following the principles of reform mathematics, consistent with the 2005 revised Ontario curriculum emphasis on teaching for understanding rather than on rote application of rules. It will provide opportunities to deepen mathematical understanding of elementary mathematics through hands-on activities, discussion, problem solving and modeling.

The major topic areas in term 2, also developed through problem-solving and modeling, support understanding of patterning, algebra, integers, and measurement.

A deep and connected conceptual understanding is needed for effective classroom teaching, and hence is a requirement of the program. This course is designed for students needing extra time and support to develop or redevelop such understanding.
