There are two options for each of our Master of Science (MSc) programs: (A) thesis-based, and (B) course-based.

  • The thesis option fosters the independent research abilities of students. These objectives are achieved through a combination of course work and research. This option is ideal for students seeking to continue on to doctoral studies as well as students interested in research and development careers within industry. All thesis students must enrol full-time in the program.
  • The course based option is a professionally focused graduate degree designed to enhance advanced technical knowledge, practical skills, and leadership abilities in engineering practice. This option emphasizes coursework. 

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The objective of our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs is to foster students’ scholarly skills and independent research abilities through a combination of formal course work and dissertation (research) work.

 

MSc in Chemical Engineering

MSc in Civil Engineering

The MSc in Civil Engineering satisfies the demand for highly-qualified personnel in the field of Civil Engineering. This demand is fuelled by the requirements to maintain an aging infrastructure and to maintain and develop natural resources with minimal environmental impact to natural systems. Sustainability and structural durability and the impact of climate change on civil engineering works have become increasingly important challenges in the field of civil engineering.

This program offers students the opportunity for advanced study and the development of independent research abilities in the discipline areas of construction, environmental, geotechnical and geoenvironmental, rock, structural, transportation and water resources engineering. Students will have the opportunity to conduct advanced study in emerging areas such as:  intelligent construction equipment management and computer-integrated construction engineering; electrokinetic ground improvement and remediation; rockburst dynamics and dynamic stability of structures; structural fire engineering; structural health monitoring and structural dynamics; and studies on multiphase jets and plumes and dynamics of complex fluids.

The field of Chemical Engineering serves a wide range of industrial sectors, including petroleum, pulp and paper, bio-refining, cement, pharmaceuticals, and waste treatment. The PhD program in Chemical Engineering has been designed to meet the needs of these sectors through a comprehensive study program. Our PhD program in Chemical Engineering is open to graduates from the current Master's in Chemical Engineering program at Lakehead University, as well as exceptional graduates of chemical engineering or related programs from across the country and around the world.

The program aims to provide students with a solid basis for careers in chemical engineering in academia and industry. PhD in Civil Engineering

The PhD in Civil Engineering program is designed for highly qualified personnel interested in a rewarding career in fundamental or applied research. The Doctor of Philosophy program involves advanced courses and an intensive research program culminating in a thesis. The development of applied research skills will also prepare PhD graduates for a career either in or outside of academia in new and traditional fields of Civil Engineering including but not limited to structural, fire safety, geotechnical, water resources, construction, environmental and transportation engineering.

PhD in Mechanical Engineering

The PhD program in Mechanical Engineering is designed to train independent researchers. The students are called upon to perform highly specialized and original research that makes a distinct contribution of knowledge to one of the major focus areas of our program: mechatronics, vibration control, diagnostics, prognostics, alternative energy, energy harvesting, engines, dynamics, design and manufacturing.

This PhD program includes the general areas of specialization in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. Under the direct supervision of one of our faculty members, the PhD candidates learn to review the state of current technical knowledge in an engineering research area, to identify strengths and weaknesses in this research and to devise a new research initiative to contribute to the area. Students must carry out this research project with objectivity and care, and they are expected to document and publish their results in internationally recognized journals and conferences.
