Academic Skills Mentor Program

IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Academic Skills Mentor Program will not be available for the in Spring/Summer 2023 term and will return in Fall 2023!

How We Can Help

During the Fall & Winter academic terms our Academic Skills Peer Mentors will run group support sessions that you can attend to help develop your Academic Skills. They will also have drop-in times available, if you would like to talk to a fellow student and get assistance understanding where in the university to go for help.

We are providing our academic skills through group sessions. Therefore, we encourage you to join our mailing list or check the Academic Support Zone events calendar to be notified of all upcoming academic skill sessions. If more support is needed, we are happy to work with students on a case-by-case basis. Please fill out our interest form below to help us plan these sessions:

Please Note: The Peer Mentors are not academic advisors and cannot give you information about course registration, course selection, or advice about what you should pursue while in university. Please reach out to Student Central with questions related to these topics: studentcentral@lakeheadu.ca

Group Support Sessions

One of the key parts of this program is our group support sessions. Our sessions provide a variety of supports, including:

  • Academic Writing
  • Time Management
  • Study Skills
  • Homework Sessions
  • Exam Prep and more!

Each session is set up differently based on the topic, which includes presentations, games, study sessions, or any combination of those. Go to the events calendar on the main page or the events tab to see specific events. If you cannot attend our in-person sessions, virtual sessions are available. If you need other accommodations please reach out to us with the contact info below.

Drop-in Support Sessions

If you would like to speak to the mentors about a challenge you are facing and want to know where to go in the university for the appropriate support you can drop-in to the Academic Support Zone (LI 2004) during scheduled drop-in times, which will resume in the Fall.  If you need other accommodations please reach out to us with the contact info below.

Orillia Students

If you are an Orillia campus student and would like to participate in this program, please attend our Zoom sessions.  If you need any assistance, please reach out to us at mentors.ssc@lakeheadu.ca
