Below you will find a few options to further explore.

Department of Graduate Studies in Education

A teacher going through a lesson with her studentsThe Department of Graduate Studies in Education offers masters and doctoral programs in the area of education. The Master of Education program has two fields of study: Educational Studies and Education for Change. Students in Educational Studies often pursue courses in areas such as specific curricular areas, educational policy or leadership, special education, or educational technology, for example. Students in Education for Change specialize in Social Justice Education, Indigenous Education, or Environmental and Sustainability Education. We also have partnership specializations with the Department of Gender and Women's' Studies and the Department of Gerontology. All students in the Master of Education program have the option to complete a course-based, portfolio-based, or thesis-based masters program.

The typical duration is two years of study, and all programs and specializations are offered face-to-face, fully online, or a mixture. Lakehead University also partners with the University of Windsor and Brock University to offer a Joint Ph.D. in Educational Studies program. The program has three fields of study: Cognition and Learning, Social/Cultural//Political Contexts of Education, and Educational Policy and Leadership. Students from all three universities attend classes together, allowing students to benefit from the joint expertise of three faculties of education. Intensive, face-to-face Doctoral Seminars are hosted for the first two summers of the doctoral program in order to explore qualitative and quantitative methodologies more fully. All other courses are conducted online.

Social Justice Studies

Lakehead University Social Justice Studies

Social Justice Studies is an interdisciplinary, transformative program, meaning that when you graduate, you will see and understand the world from an intersectional, justice informed, perspective. You will be able to combine academic study with activism, research with impact.  You will be well prepared to continue on to a variety of PhD programs, succeed in law school, find work in the nonprofit, health, or education sectors, be more effective in your current role, and / or be a more powerful change agent in your community.

Students may apply for the Gender and Women’s Studies Specialization, and they may choose from one of the streams within the program: course work, research project, creative project, or practicum.
