The Alumni Association of Lakehead University has been honouring distinguished alumni since 1989 when the first Alumni Award was given. Each year, the Association presents a number of awards to alumni in recognition of significant personal accomplishments and contributions to the community.   

Help us recognize our EXCEPTIONAL and UNCONVENTIONAL graduates whose reputation, achievements or future potential will bring honour and prestige to Lakehead University. 

Nomination Criteria and Forms

Nominations are accepted throughout the year. The annual deadline for nominations is March 31st.
The Awards Committee reviews nominations and presents their choice(s) of award recipients to the Alumni Association of Lakehead University's Board of Directors each summer. The awards are presented at the Lakehead Celebrates event held each Fall during our Alumni Homecoming Weekend.
Submissions are held for consideration for a period of three (3) years.

Awards Terms of Reference


The Awards:

Trailblazer Award   NEW!

The Trailblazer Award is presented annually in recognition of a Lakehead University graduate, of the last ten (10) years, who has flourished since graduation.  The recipient will have shown exceptional and unconventional accomplishment in their professional career, community involvement, and/or philanthropic work in Canada or around the world. 

Exceptional Alumni Award  (formerly known as "Outstanding Young Alumni" award)

The Exceptional Alumni Award is presented by the Alumni Association to an alumnus/a who has demonstrated distinction or outstanding achievement in a particular field, community service work, personal accomplishment, or significant local, national, or international recognition for a personal endeavour.

Distinguished Alumni Award  (formerly known as "Alumni Honour Award")

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually in recognition of a seasoned Lakehead University alumnus/a well-established in their chosen career or field. The award recognizes significant lifetime contributions by an individual, whether through professional accomplishment, community involvement, or philanthropic dedication.

Ambassador Award   NEW!

The Ambassador Award is presented annually in recognition of a champion of Lakehead University. This award is presented to an individual whose dedication and continuing support of Lakehead University has made a significant impact on students, alumni, faculty and staff. Presented to an internal or external champion, the award recognizes the exceptional and unconventional community of Lakehead University.

Legacy Award

The Legacy Award recipient has demonstrated exceptional commitment and contributions to the Alumni Association and the Lakehead University community through their actions.  The recipient exemplifies the highest standards of personal and professional integrity, civic responsibility, vision and leadership.  This award identifies the recipient as a valued member of the alumni community.

This award is presented at the discretion of the Alumni Association of Lakehead University Board of Directors.

Honorary Members

An Honorary Membership is the highest honour the Association can bestow on a non-graduate, and recognizes a person’s exceptional service to, affinity for, or support of the University and Alumni Association.

This award is presented at the discretion of the Alumni Association of Lakehead University Board of Directors.
